Wrestling Kicks Off Ivy Run, Heads To Brown, Harvard

STORY LINES:
• With 14 straight Ivy League titles and 73 consecutive Ancient Eight dual meet wins, the Cornell wrestling team has long been the conference's bellwether program and looks to extend both when it visits Brown and Harvard this weekend.
• The ninth-ranked Big Red heads to Brown on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m., then will be back on the mats at 6:30 p.m. at Harvard.
• Both contests will be available on the Ivy League Digital Network and locally on 1160 ESPN Ithaca with Will LeBlond on the call.
• At 7-2, Cornell continues its dual match schedule as it begins it search for an unprecedented 15th consecutive Ivy League title.
• Senior Gabe Dean, a leading candidate for the Hodge Trophy, has dominated all season long and has won 15 of his 21 matches this season by fall with seven victories over wrestlers ranked in the top 20 — including six bonus point wins.
• He enters the weekend with 138 career wins, good for fifth place all-time at Cornell.
• The Big Red has big goals — Cornell is eyeing yet another top five team effort at NCAAs and has a number of wrestlers with national championship and All-America aspirations.
• Dean, along with 2015 NCAA finalist and two-time All-American Brian Realbuto, as well as 2016 All-American Dylan Palacio, headline an experienced and talented lineup.
• Two of Palacio, Taylor Simaz (157) or Brandon Womack (165) will make up the starting lineup at the two middle weights.
• In addition, two-time NCAA qualifier Mark Grey (133) and 2016 NCAA qualifier Joey Galasso (149) join first-year starter Will Koll (141) in the regular lineup.
• Senior Craig Scott and 2016 NCAA qualifier Jeramy Sweany are competing for the top spot at heavyweight, while Honis and Owen Scott are jockeying at 197.
• Sophomore Dalton Macri, an NCAA qualifier a season ago, as well as freshman Noah Baughman, will likely be the choice at 125 pounds.
• In the first NCAA Wrestling Coaches' Panel Rankings released this season, seven Big Red wrestlers appeared in the top 33, including top-ranked Gabe Dean at 184 and third-ranked Brian Realbuto at 174.
• Grey sits 17th at 133, while Simaz (No. 24 at 157), Galasso (No. 26 at 149), Honis (No. 26 at 197) and Koll (No. 33 at 133) also appear in the weight class rankings.
• Harvard's Josef Johnson is the lone opponent ranked this weekend, sitting No. 26 in the 174-pound field.

THE STREAKS:
• Cornell has won 10 consecutive EIWA team titles, the longest streak in conference history.
• Head coach Rob Koll's teams have racked up 14 Ivy League titles in a row, the longest title streak in any sport in conference history.
• Cornell has won 73 consecutive Ivy League dual meets dating back to the 2001-02 campaign.
• The Big Red has crowned at least one EIWA champion in each of the last 15 seasons and in 25 of the last 26 years.
• The Big Red is 53-1 (.981) in its last 54 duals against current EIWA competitors dating back to 2010-11.
• Cornell is 92-4-1 (.954) in dual meet action against current EIWA teams dating back to 2004-05, including 83-0 against teams other than Lehigh.
• Cornell has placed in the top five at the NCAA championships in six of the last eight seasons and in the top 10 in 12 of the last 14 years (nine straight).
• Cornell is 100-22-1 (.817) in dual meet competition in the last seven seasons.
• The Big Red is 39-6 (.867) in its last 45 home duals dating back to the 2009-10 season.
• Big Red wrestling has won 71 consecutive dual meets against unranked teams dating back to the beginning of the 2007-08 season.
• Cornell has won 32 straight meets against New York state opponents.
• The Big Red has claimed a record five consecutive New York State team titles.

ABOUT BROWN:
• The Bears are 3-3 on the season entering Friday night's dual meet against Binghamton.
• Brown will be wrestling three times on Saturday, starting with its match against the Big Red — Rhode Island College (2:30 p.m.) and Columbia (6 p.m.) will also be on the docket.
• Brown finished 35th at the Midlands Championship earlier this year behind two wins apiece from 184-pounder CJ LaFragola and 133-pounder Jimmy Pawelski.
• LaFragola (17-9) and Jon Viruet (19-11 at 165 pounds) led the Bears in wins, while heavyweight Ian Butterbrodt (13-7) and 149-pounder Travis Vasquez (8-4) are also off to great starts.
• Head coach Todd Beckerman, in his fourth season directing the Bears' program, has mentored five NCAA participants and one All-American since arriving in Providence.

THE CORNELL-BROWN SERIES:
• Cornell has a decisive 53-2 edge in the all-time dual meet series with Brown and has won 19 consecutive matchups.
• The Bears last defeated the Big Red 19-16 on Feb. 15, 1997.

LAST TIME VS. BROWN:
• For the second day in a row, the bottom of Cornell's lineup came up big and the Big Red extended its Ivy League win streak to 14 years with a 30-13 victory over Brown on Jan. 16, 2016 at the Friedman Wrestling Center.
• Cornell won its 70th straight against Ivy League opponents, but it wasn't a walk in the park.
• A Cornell forfeit at 133, a major decision win by Justin Staudenmayer of Brown at 157 and a tight 11-7 victory by Jon Viruet at 165 gave the Bears a 13-10 win after six matches.
• Just like the previous night against Harvard, Cornell took control over the next three matches, all decided by bonus points, and earned a forfeit win at heavyweight for the final margin.
• Gabe Dean picked up six big team points with a pin, squaring Austin Pfarr's shoulders to the mat 2:35 into the first period.
• That came right after Brian Realbuto fell just short of a tech fall win over Andrew LaBrie at 174 (19-5) and before Owen Scott put the match away with an 8-0 shutout of Augustus Marker at 197.

ABOUT HARVARD:
• The Crimson are 1-4 on the season with a victory over Franklin & Marshall (36-6) prior to Saturday's afternoon Ivy League dual meet against Columbia.
• Josef Johnson is ranked at No. 26 at 174 pounds after his 22-6 start, while Jeffrey Ott has the most career victories (65) of any of the team's returning wrestlers.
• Among the other top wrestlers are 165-pounder Kyle Bierdumpfel (11-7), heavyweight Nicholas Gajdzik (14-12) and 141-pounder AJ Jaffe (14-9).
• Head coach Jay Weiss, in his 23rd season coaching the Crimson, is a two-time EIWA Coach of the Year who has mentored two national champions, 17 EIWA champs and 19 All-Americans during his tenure.

THE SERIES WITH HARVARD:
• Cornell leads the all-time series 54-9 dating back to their first meeting in 1946-47.
• The Big Red has won 15 consecutive dual meets between the teams, posting an average margin of 31-9 (459-132) in those meets.
• Harvard's last win came during the 2000-01 season, a 28-13 victory in Cambridge, Mass.

LAST TIME VS. HARVARD:
• Harvard had thoughts of ending Cornell's 68-match Ivy League win streak.
• Momentary, fleeting thoughts.
• The Big Red ripped off wins in the final five matches, four accompanied with bonus points, as the home team cruised to a 31-14 victory over the Crimson on Jan. 15, 2016 at the Friedman Wrestling Center.
• Cornell overcame a forfeit at 133 with a pair of falls in the final 20 seconds of matches and five total bonus point victories.
• Missing three regular starters, the Big Red used a big second half after trailing the Crimson 14-9 through five matches.
• Dalton Macri (125) and Gabe Dean (184), looking for extra bonus points on the way to tech falls, each earned pins late to pick up the extra important team point.
• Macri turned Nolan Hellickson for the fall with 15 seconds left to tie the dual after the first two weight classes, while Dean's fall over Michael Mocco came with 17 seconds to spare and all but put the match away, giving Cornell a virtually insurmountable 24-14 edge.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES TO KNOW:
• Senior Gabe Dean enters the weekend with 138 career wins, good for fifth on the school's career list.
• Dean's 31-match win streak entering the weekend is the seventh-longest in school history, but just his second best (52 wins from 2014-16).
• With 15 falls and 20 bonus point wins in his 21-0 start, Dean has an amazing 5.429 NCAA dominance ranking - the school record for a season is Kyle Dake's 4.784 during his senior season (2012-13).
• Dean also ranks third all-time at Cornell in individual winning percentage (138-6, .958), behind only Dave Auble (.981, 51-1) and Dake (.972, 137-4).
• Dean joined Jace Bennett '15 as the second four-time New York state intercollegiate champion in school history and just the fourth overall in meet history.
• He became the third four-time Southern Scuffle champion, joining former Big Red great Kyle Dake and Minnesota's Cole Konrad.
• Junior Brian Realbuto (105-17) became the 25th wrestler in Cornell history to reach 100 wins with a 3-2 decision over No. 4 Kyle Crutchmer of Oklahoma State on Dec. 16.

TEAM NOTES TO KNOW:
• The Big Red has won 14 consecutive Ivy crowns and 73 straight Ivy matches.
• Cornell's 14 straight Ivy League titles build on the Big Red's record of consecutive Ivy titles by the same team in a sport. The wrestling team has won three more than Cornell had in men's gymnastics (from 1967-68 to 1976-77) and men's lacrosse (1973-74 to 1982-83), as well as Princeton in men's lacrosse (1994-95 to 2003-04).
• Every four-year member of the Cornell wrestling team who has enrolled since 1980 has won at least one Ivy League title during their career.
• The Big Red holds a 32-match win streak against teams from New York dating back to 2004, including 18 consecutive at home.
• Cornell registered its fifth consecutive New York state intercollegiate title, matching Buffalo's run from 1974-78 as the longest in tournament history.
• Since the Friedman Wrestling Center opened in January of 2003, the Big Red is 68-14-1 in dual matches (.825).
• Head coach Rob Koll became the ninth Big Red coach in any sport to reach 250 career victories with a sweep at the Grapple at the Garden in 2014 and now sports a 274-89-5 record in dual meets.
• The Big Red is 255-81-3 all-time against teams from New York state in its history — Army (11-17-1), Binghamton (7-0), Brooklyn Poly (2-0), Buffalo (7-4), Clarkson (2-0), Colgate (29-2), Columbia (88-13), Cortland (17-1), Geneseo (1-0), Hofstra (19-4), Ithaca (12-3), Long Island (1-0), Manhattan (1-0), NYU (2-0), Queens (1-0), RPI (2-0), RIT (7-0-1), St. Lawrence (0-1), Syracuse (42-35-1), Union (2-1) and Wagner (2-0).
• The Big Red's coaching staff has combined for 11 All-America accolades and three individual NCAA titles at a total of two different weight classes as collegiate athletes.

NEXT UP:
• The Big Red will continue on the road to face Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. at University Gymnasium.
• Cornell leads the all-time series 87-13 dating back to the 1907-08 season when the teams first met.
• The Big Red has won 29 consecutive dual meets against the Lions.
