HANOVER, N.H. – Senior
Kaitlin Doering's first period goal would prove to be all the women's ice hockey team would need on Friday night, as sophomore
Marlène Boissonnault made 13 saves to earn her second career shutout and #8 Cornell topped Dartmouth, 1-0, at Thompson Arena in an ECAC Hockey and Ivy League battle.
The win – which was the Big Red's fourth-straight over the Big Green – moved Cornell to 14-6-2 overall and 10-3-2 in ECAC Hockey play while Dartmouth fell to 5-16-0 and 3-12-0 in conference play. It was the first shutout away from Lynah Rink for a Cornell goaltender since November 29, 2015.Â
The Big Red got off to a great start on both offense and defense. Just 30 seconds after the puck dropped, senior
Hanna Bunton broke by the defense for a quality opportunity and then on the other end, the Big Red didn't give up a shot attempt for the first three minutes and didn't allow a shot on goal until eight minutes in.
Cornell's pressure finally paid off as the midway point of the first period approached. With Dartmouth attempting to regroup in the neutral zone after a Cornell clearance, Doering pounced on a puck that had bounced off a Big Green stick and skated it down the left wing. With freshman
Paige Lewis pulling the defense towards the middle of the slot, Doering got to the dot and fired the puck to the right post and in for the 1-0 lead at the 9:31 mark.
After holding an 11-5 edge at the first break, Cornell continued the repressive defense in the second period and did not allow a shot on goal for the first 10 minutes and only gave up two in the entire period. It was the third time this season that Cornell has limited a team to two shots on goal in a single period.
The Big Red – who entered the game with a power-play goal in three-straight games – couldn't find the twine when it earned two minutes on the man-advantage at the 7:45 mark. Bunton continued to work for shots in the offensive zone, getting three off in the period. The senior created a 2-on-1 with freshman
Paige Lewis but Robyn Chemago yet again kicked out the leg pad to send Cornell into the break with the one goal lead.
Dartmouth began to get a few more looks on goal in the first 10 minutes of the third period but Boissonnault proved to be prepared, standing up to a couple of doorstep attempts from Devon Moir and then a few minutes later, squaring up on a hard shot from Mackenzie St. Onge and freezing it for a whistle.
The Big Green pulled Chemago with 90 seconds to go but couldn't put the puck past Boissonnault, who rejected one final push from Kennedy Ottenbreit as time expired.
Boissonnault (8-1-1) finished with 13Â saves while Chemago (4-13-0) made 28, and Cornell finished with the 28-14 edge in shots on goal.
Cornell will take the ice tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in Cambridge and look to get the program's first season-series sweep of Harvard since 2011-12.
