Ivy Streak To 75 With Road Sweep Of Brown, Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. and CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Cornell wrestling team extended its Ivy league win streak to 75 matches with a pair of dominant performances on the road on Saturday afternoon, sweeping through Brown (35-8) and Harvard (33-11). The Big Red improved to 9-2 (2-0 Ivy) with the victories.

Bonus points came aplenty from Big Red seniors against the Bears. Cornell earned first period falls from Taylor Simaz at 157 and Gabe Dean at 184 and technical fall triumphs from Brian Realbuto at 174 and Owen Scott at 197 to extend its Ancient Eight win streak to 74 matches.

The Big Red trailed 5-4 heading into 141 pounds, but Will Koll started a stretch that saw seven wins in eight matches, with the only loss coming in a wild 14-13 decision for Jon Viruet over Dylan Palacio at 165 pounds.

Dean again earned a fall in the nightcap, a second period stick of his cousin, Kanon. Noah Baughman also won by fall at 125, as did Ben Honis at 197.

The Crimson held an 8-5 lead after three matches, but Jonathan Furnas started a run of six consecutive Big Red victories with a 12-6 decision over Hunter Ladnier, completing a personal 2-0 day. Simaz also swept the day with a pair of bonus wins, including his 18-5 major over Coby Knight at 157 against the Crimson to give the visitors a lead it would never relinquish.

Both Dylan Palacio (165) and Realbuto (174) shook off early Crimson takedowns to claim major decision wins and Dean dominated his cousin before putting him away for his 140th collegiate victory and his 17th win by fall of the season, one off Kyle Dake's 2013 school record. Dean is now 23-0 on the year. Honis, well on his way to a tech fall victory in the final seconds, earned the extra team point with the fall coming with 38 seconds remaining in the third to cap Cornell's scoring.

The Big Red will continue on the road to face Columbia on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. at University Gymnasium. Cornell leads the all-time series 87-13 dating back to the 1907-08 season when the teams first me tand has won 29 consecutive dual meets against the Lions.
