THE STORY LINE: The Big Red field hockey team will conclude its season this weekend when it travels to Hanover, N.H., to take on Dartmouth on Saturday, Nov. 4 at noon. Cornell will look to earn its fifth consecutive win vs. the Big Green, which enters the contest with a 7-9 record overall (2-4 Ivy) after having a three-game winning streak snapped last weekend by No. 16 Harvard.

THE SERIES WITH DARTMOUTH: The Big Green holds a commanding lead in the series with Cornell, going 22-15-1 against the Big Red. The teams first met in 1979, a 0-0 tie, and Dartmouth won the next five meetings before Cornell snapped its losing streak in 1985 with a 1-0 victory. From then, the series was fairly even until 1998 when Dartmouth began an eight-game winning-streak against the Big Red. Cornell ended the Big Green's run in 2006 and won five straight, its most consecutive wins in the series, before falling in consecutive one-goal games (including one overtime contest) in 2011 and 2012 … The Big Red has won the last four outings by a combined score of 21-6 to improve head coach Donna Hornibrook improved to 9-4 in the series.

SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN: Dartmouth had a three-game winning streak snapped last weekend in a 6-2 loss at No. 16 Harvard. Both of the Big Green's Ivy League wins this season have come in overtime,  beginning with a 3-2 win over Brown in a contest that went into the second round of a  shootout, before defeating Columbia 3-2 in overtime on Oct. 21. Sophomore forward Katie Spanos leads the team in goals (8), assists (9) and points (25), while junior Gemma Bautista has added eight goals and senior Sarah Tabeek has registered seven assists. In net, junior Haley Valerio has made 13 starts and owns a 3.81 goals-against average to go along with a .677 save percentage. Senior goalie Emily Wechlsler has gotten the nod in three contests and has posted a 3.67 GAA and a 6.33 save percentage.
LAST TIME VS. DARTMOUTH: The Big Red celebrated Senior Day in dominant fashion, tying the school record for goals in a single game, as it routed Dartmouth, 9-1, at Marsha Dodson Field. All three seniors scored for Cornell, led by Katy Weeks' five-point afternoon (two goals, one assist), to finish her career ranked eighth in Big Red history with 62 career points. Elizabeth Horak scored in the 22nd minute to stake Cornell a 3-0 lead, while Luisa Schulte-Bockum registered the first goal of her career on a penalty stroke at the 44:57 mark to make it a 6-1 game. Krysten Mayers matched Weeks for a game-high with two goals, while Kjersti Anderson and Gabby DePetro teamed up for a pair of goals by assisting on each other's tally. Anderson's goal was the first of the game, giving her the game-winner, while DePetro added a second assist on Cornell's final goal. The Big Red also attempted 13 penalty corners, while holding the visitors to just four attempts. In total, five goals came off penalty corners, including Dartmouth's lone tally off the stick of Joanne Nazareth. Dartmouth (4-14, 0-7) was kept in the game by freshman goalie Emma Plumb, who made 13 saves, several of which were spectacular, but she allowed seven goals in a span of 51:07 before giving way to senior Paige Duffy who stopped three and allowed the final two goals. EARLY LEADS: Scoring first has been a big part of the Big Red's success in recent years. Since Coach Hornibrook has taken over the program, Cornell has posted an impressive 111-14 record in games in which they have scored first. Conversely, the team has won only 17 games in which they have had to come back from an early deficit to win. The first was Coach Hornibrook's very first victory with the team, a 6-3 win over Lehigh in 2004, with the latest coming on Oct. 23, 2016 as Cornell overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Rider, 3-1.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Big Red is 52-28 (.650) all-time on Marsha Dodson Field. Collectively, the team has outscored its opponents by a margin of 185-122 and has taken significantly more shots (1,375-824) than its opponents. The defense has been equally solid in the circle, allowing just 415 penalty corners (5.2 per game).

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN: Seniors Katie Carlson, Isabel Josephs, and Sam McILwrick have been selected as team captains for the 2017 season. McILwrick served as co-captain during the 2016 season as well, making her just the ninth player in Big Red field hockey history to be named captain twice.

The Big Red finished ranked third in the Ivy League, posting its fourth consecutive top-three finish and earned double-digit wins for the fourth straight season and the ninth time in head coach Donna Hornibrook's 13-year career. With the Big Red's win over Brown on Oct. 21, Hornibrook earned the 116th win of her career with Cornell, surpassing Shelby (Pontz) Bowman to become the winningest coach in the history of the Big Red field hockey program. Following the season, the trio of Katy Weeks '17, Krysten Mayers '18 and Sam McILwrick '18 were honored by the Ivy League and the NFHCA. Weeks was named All-Ivy for the fourth time of her illustrious career, taking home first-team honors, along with McILwrick, while Mayers was named to the second-team. Weeks went on to be named to the All-Mideast Region first-team, while both Mayers and McILwrick were named to the second team.
