ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams both won William S. Field Invitational titles this weekend at Oxley Equestrian Center, with the men knocking off the defending national champions to do it and the women defeating archrival Virginia in the finals. The women improved to 8-2, while the men are now 6-2.
After knocking off Skidmore 22-8 in the semifinals, Cornell avenged an early season loss to Virginia with a 21-14 victory in the finals. Cornell jumped out to a 4-1 lead, only to see the Cavaliers tie it at 4-4. The battle continued into the second as the teams matched each other score for score and went into the half with Cornell ahead 9-8. The Big Red pulled ahead by four goals in the third and extended its lead throughout the fourth to take the title, 21-14.
The men rallied from five goals down entering the fourth chukker in the final to paste defending champion Roger Williams for a 22-14 victory. The Mustangs led 5-1 at the end of one, answering the initial Big Red goal with a 5-0 run. Cornell would match Roger Williams in the second and would go into the halftime trailing 10-6. Down by five heading into the final 7:30, Cornell kept its composure and started an unexpected comeback. With 1:40 to go, the Big Red scored the tying goal. From there it was all Cornell, completing an improbable comeback to take the victory at 22-14, wresting the Field title from 2016 champion Roger Williams. The Big Red opened the tournament by advancing to the finals with a 32-12 win over Skidmore.
