ITHACA, N.Y. – The #7 women's hockey team entered the third period with a two goal deficit but, thanks to goals from freshmen
Jaime Bourbonnais and
Amy Curlew, forced overtime and earned a 2-2 tie against #5 St. Lawrence in an ECAC Hockey matchup on Friday night at Lynah Rink. The tie extended Cornell's unbeaten streak to a season-long seven games.
The Saints gained the early edge in play in the first period, earning a power-play under four minutes into the frame. St. Lawrence capitalized less than 30 seconds into the man-advantage when Kalie Grant gobbled up a rebound at the right post and the lead would hold into the first break.
Cornell kept the play in the offensive zone to start the second period but it would be the Saints that grabbed the second goal of the game – and the 2-0 lead – when Kennedy Marchment picked off a pass near the blue line and walked in on
Marlène Boissonnault for a top-shelf finish.
Despite the score line entering the third period, Cornell continued to play with energy and cut the Saints' lead in half just 3:02 into the final frame. Sophomore co-captain
Micah Hart drove the puck down the left wing and dished a pass to classmate
Lenka Serdar. Serdar's ensuing shot was blocked into the high slot and Bourbonnais one-timed the puck past the glove of Grace Harrison.
"We were just a little bit hesitant and I thought as the game went on we started playing more our game, more aggressive," said head coach
Doug Derraugh. "Obviously it was big for us to be down 2-0 going into the third period and to be able to come back like that was a huge period for us."
The St. Lawrence defense continued to block shots in front of Harrison – and would finish the game with 24 total – but the Big Red was still able to tie the game with 9:20 to play. After freshman
Paige Lewis worked the puck to freshman
Kristin O'Neill for shot from the left circle - and the rebound again bounced Cornell's way - Curlew jumped on the puck near the right post. It was the second time this season that the Big Red had a goal and both assists all earned by the Class of 2020.
Boissonnault preserved the tie with her biggest save of the game halfway through overtime when Hannah Miller got around the defense and tried to deke her down but the sophomore goaltender stuck with the play and made a left pad save on the backhand attempt.
Boissonnault (10-1-2) finished with 19 saves and Harrison (20-4-4) had 16 saves.
St. Lawrence (23-4-4, 15-3-3 ECAC Hockey) held the final edge in shots on goal (21-18) but Cornell (17-6-5, 13-3-4 ECAC Hockey) held the 23-13 edge in the circle.
The Big Red will wrap up the regular season tomorrow at 3 p.m. when #3 Clarkson visits Lynah Rink. The game will also serve to recognize the graduating seniors:
Hanna Bunton, Katilin Doering,
Sydney Smith and
Paula Voorheis.
