CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The men's tennis team moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Ivy League with a 4-2 victory over Harvard on Sunday afternoon at Beren Tennis Center.
Cornell (19-3, 4-1) rallied from a two-point deficit to defeat upstart Harvard (16-9, 4-1) and join the Crimson and Columbia (15-4, 4-1) atop the Ivy League standings. Coming off a shocking upset of the 20th-ranked and three-time defending champion Lions on Saturday, unranked Harvard started Sunday's match against Cornell by winning the doubles point.
The Crimson then won the first set in four of the six singles matches and eventually won the first singles match to be completed at No. 3, taking a 2-0 lead. But the Big Red went on to win the second set of the other five singles matches. Senior
Colin Sinclair won in three sets at No. 1 to get the Big Red on the board, and senior
Chris Vrabel won a pair of tie-breakers in a straight-set victory at No. 4 to tie the match.
Freshman
Pietro Rimondini also won in straight sets at No. 5, marking his 11th consecutive singles victory, then junior
Daniel Grunberger clinched the match in three sets at No. 6.
Cornell wraps up its regular season with a pair of matches against Yale at 1 p.m. Saturday and Brown at 1 p.m. Sunday at Reis Tennis Center. If the Big Red wins both matches, it guarantees itself at least a share of the Ivy League title. Columbia also takes on Yale and Brown next weekend, while Harvard travels to Penn and Princeton.
