Men's Tennis Rallies Past Brown For 2nd Ivy League Title

ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's tennis team won the program's second Ivy League title in the most befitting of fashions Sunday — via nailbiting 4-3 victory.

Senior Bernardo Casares Rosa did the honors of clinching the Big Red's latest come-from-behind victory, winning at No. 6 singles Sunday to send Cornell past Brown and give the hosts a memorable finish to the regular season at Reis Tennis Center.

With its sixth win of the season by a one-point margin, Cornell (21-3, 6-1) has won the second Ivy League title in the program's history — and the first under Silviu Tanasoiu, the Savitt-Weiss Head Coach of Men's Tennis.

While the Big Red likely will not win the three-way tiebreaker with Columbia and Harvard to determine the recipient of the Ivy League's automatic bid for the NCAA tournament (determined by the highest ranking in the ITA's new weekly rankings on Tuesday), Cornell is still well positioned to earn the program's first at-large bid to the national championship tournament. The NCAA field will be announced on the evening of Tuesday, May 2.

Brown (11-11, 0-7) came prepared to spoil the party, starting off by winning the doubles point despite a win from the Big Red's No. 2 pairing of freshman Lev Kazakov and junior Daniel Grunberger.

The Bears then went up 3-1 with wins at Nos. 2 and 5 singles bookending a dominating victory from sophomore David Volfson at No. 1. But in the meantime, senior Colin Sinclair won a first-set tiebreaker at No. 3 to keep the Big Red on track. Senior Chris Vrabel wrapped up a victory in straight sets at No. 4 shortly thereafter.

Sinclair used an early break to take control and ride out a win in two sets to put the balance of the match on Casares Rosa at No. 6. An overruled call late in the second set allowed him to serve for the match, which he did to kick off the celebration.
