PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore
Will Simoneit had three doubles among his five hits, but the baseball team was swept in a Friday doubleheader against Princeton, 9-7 and 9-5, at Clarke Field.
Princeton (12-26-1, 7-11 Ivy League) scored 15 of its 18 runs on the day in the sixth inning or later, moving into a tie for third place in the Ivy League Lou Gehrig Division with Cornell (19-17, 7-11).
The teams will trek to Ithaca, N.Y. for the final two games of the series in the series of a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Game 1: PRINCETON 9, CORNELL 7 (Box Score)
Junior
Dale Wickham wasted no time making an impact in his return to the lineup after a 13-game absence, going 3-for-3 with three RBI, but the Big Red's four-run rally in the seven inning came up short in the day's first game.
Princeton broke a 1-all tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Cornell stayed close with two runs in the sixth. Junior
Pierre Le Dorze doubled and scored on a two-out single by Wickham. Junior
Trey Baur then followed with a run-scoring double of his own.
But the Tigers scored four more runs in the sixth — all with two out — against the Big Red bullpen and take a commanding six-run lead into the final frame.
A dropped fly ball set the table for a Cornell rally in the seventh. Simoneit's last of two doubles in the game drove in another run, and Wickham followed with a two-run single to cut the home side's lead to two runs before the final out was recorded.
Game 2: PRINCETON 9, CORNELL 5 (Box Score)
The Big Red took a 3-0 lead in the second inning and junior
Justin Lewis followed up his gem last Saturday against division-leading Penn with another strong outing, but the first batter after his departure hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to put Princeton ahead for good.
Le Dorze led off the second with a walk, moved up to third on Simoneit's double over third base, then scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. Baur drove in Simoneit with a single to right and — after a double to straight-away center from sophomore
Josh Arndt — Baur scored on a sacrifice fly to deep left from senior
Frankie Padulo to give the Big Red an early three-run cushion.
Lewis faced just 10 batters through a quiet first three innings, then minimized damage in the fourth by only allowing one run after the Tigers had runners on the corners with no out.
Armed with the lead, Princeton blew the game open with four in the seventh by touching up the Big Red bullpen for four hits with a walk.
