ITHACA, N.Y. -- When the Cornell football team takes the field for the first time in 2017 on Sept. 16 at Delaware, the Big Red will have four captains lead them out of the locker room. Fifth-year senior and three-time captain
Miles Norris will be joined by classmates
Kurt Frimel,
Jack Gellatly and
Nick Gesualdi. The four were elected in a vote of their teammates at the start of fall camp, which ended Tuesday with the first day of classes..
Norris joins Jeff Mathews '14 as the program's lone three-time captains, returning for a fifth season. The middle linebacker has been a true leader in every sense of the word. On the field, he has been an impact defender, posting 134 tackles with 11.0 for a loss (5.5 sacks), three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick in 30 career contests. Off the field, Norris has been involved in a number of projects that continue to enrich the Cornell community. He is a member of both the Sphinx Head Senior Society and the Red Key Athletic Honor Society and has been an active participant in the Big Red Readers program. He serves on the Engaged Cornell Student Advisory Group and spent his offseason interning in the University's Department of Financial Affairs. In past summers, he has interned for both Northwestern Mutual and Robert W. Baird & Co. Norris received the Ronald P. Lynch Senior Spirit Award, given to student-athletes whose leadership on and off the field model the ideals of the Big Red athletics department, this past spring.
Frimel, like Norris a linebacker on the Big Red defense, enters his second year as a starter after a breakthrough junior campaign. The two-year letter winner ranked second in the Ivy League and 24th nationally with three forced fumbles and 20th nationally and first in the Ancient Eight in fumble recoveries in 2016. He ended the season with 59 tackles and a team-high 6.0 for a loss with 1.5 sacks, two pass breakups, three forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered. Frimel has played in 24 varsity contests, racking up 93 tackles and 7.0 tackles for loss.
Gellatly has been a key contributor on special teams and in the offensive backfield, lettering in each of his first three seasons. A Capital One Academic All-District selection a year ago, he has piled up 293 rushing yards and a touchdown to go along with 16 catches for 152 yards. His toughness and blocking make him a great complement to All-Ivy running back
Chris Walker.
A third team Associated Press FCS All-American and a unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selection in 2016, Gesualdi tied for the conference lead and ranked third nationally with his six interceptions, including four coming in Ivy play. One of the top returning defensive players in the country, he has been a mainstay leading an ever-improving unit. The 2014 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and an honorable mention all-conference pick that same season, Gesualdi has been credited with 190 tackles with 7.5 for a loss, 28 passes defended, three forced fumbles and 11 interceptions. The 11 interceptions is third on the school's career list and just four off a 67-year-old record.
