Four From Women's Lacrosse Selected in Inaugural WPLL Draft

WOBURN, Mass. — Three recent Cornell alumnae were selected in the Women's Professional Lacrosse League draft on Wednesday night. Renee Poullott, Catherine Ellis and Kristy Gilbert, all 2017 graduates, were each selected in the league's inaugural draft. Current women's lacrosse assistant coach, Margaret Corzel, was also picked to join the ranks of the professional league.

Poullott and Corzel will join the roster for the Upstate Pride, which is managed by current Cornell women's lacrosse coach, Jenny Graap. Ellis will represent the New England Command and Kristy Gilbert will join the New York Fight.

As the Big Red's goalkeeper, Poullott became the program's winningest goalkeeper while also finishing second in the record books in all-time saves (453). The Syracuse, N.Y. native also ranked top-10 in the nation last season in save percentage (.506) and goals against average (8.62).  In addition, Poullott was named the IWLCA Regional All-America first team and garnered All-Ivy League honorable mention for her efforts this season.

An offensive threat, Ellis led the team in goals and game-winning goals this past season while also ranking second on the squad in assists and points. This year, Ellis earned All-Ivy honorable mention while also being named to the Ivy League All-Tournament Team twice.

Gilbert was known on the field for her versatility, contributing to both the offense and defense. During the 2017 season, she was second on the team in caused turnovers, fourth in points, tied for fourth in goals, fifth in assists and sixth in ground balls. The tri-captain was also named to the All-Ivy first team and was a member of the IWLCA Regional All-America second team this year.

Prior to becoming an assistant coach with the Big Red, Corzel was a three-time captain at North Carolina, helping her team to a national championship in 2013. The Berwyn, Pa. native also shares the Tar Heels' school record for games started in a season with 22.

Corzel is no stranger to the professional lacrosse circuit, playing all nine games with the Philadelphia Force during its inaugural season in 2016.

The WPLL consists of five teams and is scheduled for its first full season next summer after an exhibition weekend this fall.
