HARRISONBURG, Va. -- James Madison remained unbeaten, but the Cornell volleyball team put up a fight in its first outside competition of the season as the Dukes claimed a 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 victory over the Big Red on Friday evening at the Tropical Smoothie Invite. JMU improved to 4-0 on the season, while the Big Red slipped to 0-1.
Kit McCarty and
Emily Wemhoff each had eight kills to lead the Big Red. Carla Sgaderlla led three Big Red players in double figures in digs with 13, joining
Kiley McPeek (11 digs) and
Chelsea Sincox (10 digs, 11 assists).
Katie Randolph added 11 assists and six digs in the loss. Freshman
Alena Madar had three kills and two digs in her first varsity action.
The Dukes hit .267 as a team and had eight blocks in the win. Taylor Gail had a team-high 11 kills, while Bryn Recker (10 kills, 14 digs) had a double-double. Sarah Martin (16 assists) and Tilbe Yaglioglu (15 assists) split the setting duties for the home team, who hit .229 or better in all three sets.
Cornell will attempt to bounce back on Saturday when it takes on Drake (10 a.m.) and Hampton (5 p.m.) to close out its first weekend of the year.
