ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's squash team hits the road for a busy weekend in the Green Mountains, where it will play three matches over the course of three days at Williams and Midldebury.
Cornell (3-5) starts off with a 5 p.m. Friday match against George Washington (6-4 entering Wednesday's match at Navy) at Williams, then it treks north into Vermont for a match at 5 p.m. Saturday against Franklin & Marshall and host Middlebury at noon Sunday.
The Big Red sits 15th in the most recent College Squash Association rankings, winning one of three matches last weekend at Belkin International Squash Courts. After falling to Ivy League foes Harvard and Dartmouth, Cornell rebounded with a 7-2 triumph over Hobart on Sunday evening.
Junior
Perry Hanson was the only member of the squad to win two matches on the weekend, defeating opponents from both Dartmouth and Hobart after being the Big Red's only player to win a game against national #2 Harvard the day prior. He moved into a tie for the most victories on the team with freshman
Illia Presman, who has a matching 5-3 record from primarily the No. 5 position. Junior
Alex Jung (No. 7) and sophomore
Jared Scherl (No. 8) have matching 4-4 records.
George Washington is ranked 11th, with Moudy Abdel-Maksoud boasting a 6-1 record from the top third of the order. Inaki de Larrauri Coral, Juan Laguna and Oisin Logan are tied with a team-high seven victories apiece in 10 matches. The Big Red leads the all-time series with the Colonials, 4-3, but GW won both of last year's meetings by slim margins of 5-4 and 6-3 – the latter coming in the 11th-place playoff of the CSA's national championships.
Franklin & Marshall (1-7) is ranked 16th, having weaved through a demanding schedule in the first half. Yannis Senkel leads the team with a 4-4 while competing from the Nos. 3 and 4 positions. Cornell holds a 26-23 lead in the all-time series, including a dramatic 5-4 victory last year.
Middlebury (5-2) is ranked 19th heading into Wednesday's match at #1 Trinity. Wiatt Hinton leads the team with a 6-1 mark from the middle of the order, and Jacob Ellen is 5-1 from the top two positions. The Big Red has won all four of its past meetings against the Panthers, including a pair of victories at the start and end of the 2015-16 season.
