ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead, shot 59 percent from the floor and cruised to a 98-61 exhibition victory over Ithaca College on Tuesday evening at Newman Arena. The Big Red will have a week to prepare for its opener at Binghamton on Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
Matt Morgan scored a game-high 22 points and added three rebounds, three assists and three steals for the home team, while
Jimmy Boeheim (16 points, five rebounds) and
Jake Kuhn (11 points, five rebounds) were also in double figures. In all, 15 different Cornell players scored and the bench tallied 59 points on the night.
Jack Gordon had nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals and
Josh Warren notched eight points for a Big Red team that had 21 assists.
Steven Julian recorded a team-best six boards.
Peter Ezema had a game-high nine rebounds and added 14 points for the Bombers, while Jake Mitchell had 12 and Riley Thompson scored 11. Mitchell added three steals and Thompson posted five rebounds. Ithaca shot just 29 percent overall, including 7-of-35 from beyond the arc (20 percent).
The teams were briefly tied at 4-4 just 90 seconds into the game, but the Big Red embarked on a 6-0 run, including a pair of baskets by Morgan, and never allowed the Bombers to get back within three. Ithaca made it interesting early, getting within 24-21 on a deep Thompson 3-pointer midway through the first before Cornell rolled off a 31-14 run to end the half. Morgan and Gordon had nine points apiece over the final 10 minutes to push the home team to a 55-35 edge at the break.
Ithaca cut the deficit to nine thanks to an 11-0 run over the first 3:20 of the second half, but Cornell methodically took control by getting to the line at will. The home team attempted 19 second half free throws and got everyone on the roster significant time, going up by as many as 39 with under three minutes remaining in the contest.
