STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Amy Shen topped the field on beam and the Big Red had three of the top four finishers in the event as Cornell placed second among three competing teams at Penn State on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red's 192.400 held off Ivy rival Penn, who scored a 192.200, but fell behind the Nittany Lions' total of 195.325.
Shen's 9.775 on beam was matched only by Penn State's Lauren Bridgens at the top of the podium, with Izzy Herczeg (9.750) and Malia Mackey (9.725) finishing third and fourth, respectively. Cornell's .150 advantage in the event (47.825-47.675) nearly made up the entire scoring difference between the conference foes. Shen also topped the Big Red on vault (sixth overall, 9.725) and bars (fifth, 9.825).
Freshman Maddison Smith was second on floor with a 9.825 to pace Cornell in the final event.
Cornell and Penn will both head to Providence, R.I. next weekend, the site of the Ivy Classic. The four-team meet will begin on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m.
