ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team repeated as the Washington College Team Race champions for the second straight year, wrapping up a three-race weekend for the Big Red on Sunday afternoon. Cornell also took eighth at the St. Mary's Women's Interconference and was 12th at the Navy Team Race League event.
Cornell went 12-3 in the two-day race on the Chester River, going undefeated on day one and holding on to top runner-up Navy by a race. Skippers Luke Andersen, Phillip Schofield, Ethan Andersen and Gerard Eastman shepherded the Big Red with a crew comprised of Kate Selley, Ana Schonander and Miranda Sannino. Cornell was 10-0 after two rounds, then held off the Midshipmen and George Washington, who was a perfect 5-0 in round three. The lineup was completely different from last season's squad that went 13-2 in winning the team race event.
The Big Red also collected a top 10 finish at St. Mary's, with the B division boat of Sebby Turner and Adeline Sutton taking sixth overall. Gabby Rizika skippered the A division, With Tara Bergstrom (races 1-8) and Becca Jordan (races 9-10) joining her. Cornell had nine top 10 finishes in B division among 10 races.
Cornell earned more points in the Team Race League standings on the Severn River by going 4-11 on the weekend. Clark Uhl, Gerard Eastman, Thomas Balk and Luke Andersen skippered the Big Red's entries, with Diana Otis, Kimberly Wong and Grace Harrison making up the crew. Cornell won a sail-off with Fordham for 12th place, going 1-2-6 to top the Rams, who took 3-4-5. The Big Red topped St. Mary's, SUNY Maritime, Fordham and Virginia during round 1.
