No. 7/9 Syracuse Uses A Pair of Runs to Top No. 21/RV WLAX, 14-7

ITHACA, N.Y – In a marquee in-state rivalry, No. 7/9 Syracuse got the better of No. 21/RV women's lacrosse by a score of 14-7 on Tuesday night at Schoellkopf Field. After a tight back-and-forth start, the Orange's No.1-ranked offense hit it into high gear and used big scoring runs in each half to propel itself to victory.

Caroline Allen led Cornell's offensive attack, netting a hat trick to mark the fifth game this season that she has scored three or more in a single match. The sophomore was a perfect 2-2 from the free position and is now tied for sixth in program history in free position goals in a single season (11).

Senior captain Ida Farinholt also had a multi-goal day, recording two scores to signify her fifth game this season that she has scored in.

The match was close in the beginning, with Syracuse (6-2) racing out to a fast start by nabbing two goals in 27 seconds, but Grace Paletta and Tomasina Leska each answered for Cornell (4-3) in a span on 46 seconds to knot it up. Both teams exchanged goals to make it 3-3 10:20 into the first, but SU went on its first run of five goals to set itself ahead, 8-3. In the final seven minutes of the first half, Allen and Farinholt each got on the board to close the gap heading into the locker rooms.

Syracuse would then go on its second run of the day to set the tone in the final half, ringing off six unanswered to go up, 14-5. Allen would close out the match with a pair of goals.

Joey Coffy led the way for the squad in ground balls (4) and draw controls (4) and had two caused turnovers along with senior captain Taylor Reed and Paletta. Goalkeeper Katie McGahan made seven saves in 55:41 of action while freshman Hailey Andress made her collegiate debut with 4:19 of playing time in the crease.

Syracuse was led by attacker Emily Hawryschuk who laid claim to five goals and fellow attacker Nicole Levy registered a hat trick. Goalkeeper Asa Goldstock made 16 saves in 53:34 of playing time and Hannah Van Middele had two in 6:26 of relief.

Despite the loss, Cornell out-shot the Orange, 31-25, and had the advantage in ground ball pickups, 16-11. SU had the slight edge in draw controls, 12-11, but committed more turnovers (16-12). The Big Red defense also kept the nation's top-ranked offense below its average of 17.57 goals/game.

The team is back at home at Schoellkopf Field this Saturday, hosting Yale in Ivy League play. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
