Women's Tennis Makes Home Debut This Weekend

ITHACA, N.Y. — The women's tennis team will play its first home matches of the season this weekend, when it takes on Army West Point at 1 p.m. Saturday and Binghamton at 1 p.m. Sunday at Reis Tennis Center.

The Big Red got its dual season started last Saturday in Fort Myers, Florida, when it lost a pair of neutral-site matches to Georgia State and Miami. Cornell's two points against the Panthers came from the lower portion of the singles order behind victories from freshman Valerie Ho (No. 5) and Sarah Campbell (No. 6). Later that afternoon against the 17th-ranked Hurricanes, freshman Katherine Nguyen knocked off Daniella Roldan, the nation's 82nd-ranked singles player, at the No. 1 position.

Army West Point (1-1) opened last weekend with a split in the Mid-Atlantic region. After suffering a 4-0 loss to 23rd-ranked Virginia to start the trip, the Black Knights rebounded with a 6-1 victory over Georgetown. Including fall tournament play, Sam DiMaio and Jen Shin lead the team with 11 singles victories apiece. Army returns the top of its lineup from last season, headlined by Ana Joyner, Melanie Allen and Genevieve McCormick.

Saturday's match will mark the 16th meeting between the programs, with Cornell having won 14. That includes a 6-1 victory in late January last season, with senior Mariko Iinuma winning in both singles and doubles and sophomore Ana Elhom winning her first collegiate dual singles match.

Binghamton opens its dual season Saturday night at Temple after posting a 4-14 record last year. The Eisenberg twins, Samara and Michelle, return to the top portion of the Bearcats' lineup. Cornell is 18-2 all-time against Binghamton after a 7-0 victory Feb. 25, 2018.

Six of Cornell's seven victories last season came at Reis Tennis Center. Both matches are free to attend and open to the public.
