#6/6 Women's Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep of #8/8 Colgate

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The No. 6/6 Cornell women's ice hockey team topped No. 8/8 Colgate by a score of 4-2, completing the weekend sweep of the reigning national runners up.

The Big Red (13-2-5, 10-2-1) was led by Lenka Serdar, who score three points for the third time in her career to tie a career high.

Cornell opened the game with a goal from Maddie Mills. The sophomore forward was planted in front of the net as Jaime Bourbannais fired the puck from the blue line and Mills got just enough stick on it to redirect it past Colgate goaltender Julia Vandyk.

Serdar then got on the board with a shorthanded goal with 5:14 left in the first period to put the Big Red up 2-0. Micah Zandee-Hart jumped in front of a Colgate pass in the neutral zone and brought it into the offensive zone. Meanwhile Serdar skated to right of the net. Zandee-Hart sent the puck ahead to Serdar, who fired a backhander to the back of the net.

"I thought we came out real strong," said head coach Doug Derraugh. "In the first period we took some of the momentum away from them and played really aggressive and took the play to them. The second period I thought it was a reverse I thought they were really taking it to us."

The Big Red held the Raiders to just two shots on net in the first period.

The Raiders (14-8-4, 8-4-2) answered back in the early portion of the second period with two Jessie Eldridge goals.

Then within the matter of 58 seconds the Big Red put up two goals to put the game out of reach.

The first of the two goals came on the power play with 5:58 left in the second. Willow Slobodzian fired the initial shot which worked its way around to the other side of the net where Serdar was planted. The senior forward took a quick swipe at it and sent it home to give the Big Red the lead again.

Serdar picked up her third point of the game less than a minute later on Paige Lewis' goal. Serdar was near the left circle when she sent the puck back near the blue line to Kendra Nealey. Nealey fired a rising shot towards the net that deflected off Lewis midway to the cage and found the back of the net.

"We had a good push towards the end of the second period with some big goals," Derraugh said. "That was crucial. If we hadn't had that it might have been a different third period."

Marlene Boissonnault picked up 47th career victory, which ties her for third all-time in program history with Sarah Mott (1978-81). Boissonnault, who recorded 19 saves on the afternoon, is six wins shy of tying Amanda Mazzotta (2008-11) for second on the program's all-time list.

The Big Red has a midweek matchup with Syracuse at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Tennity Ice Pavillion.
