Field Hockey Travels to Face #7 Princeton

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell field hockey team will travel to Princeton for its second-to-last game in the regular season.

  • Cornell is off to its best start since 2015 with an 9-6 record with wins against #18 Syracuse (2-1, 9/7), Lock Haven (2OT) (3-2, 9/8), Lafayette (4-1, 9/23), Colgate (4-1, 10/1), Columbia (2OT SO) (1-0, 10/5), Yale (2-1, 10/13), Bucknell (1-0, 10/15), Lehigh (4-0, 10/23) and Brown (4-0, 10/26).
  • Sophomore forward Claire Jones leads the team with 18 points on six goals and six assists. The sophomore scored two game-winning goals in the first weekend and has assisted on goals against Penn and Colgate. She later scored two goals against Yale, before notching two goals and two assists against Brown and one assist at Syracuse.
  • Junior forward Grace Royer follows closely with 17 points on six goals and five assists. She scored goals against Lafayette (2), Penn (2), Colgate and Brown. She notched assists against Syracuse, Lafayette, Colgate, Yale and Lehigh.
  • Freshman midfielder Caroline Ramsey follows Jones with nine points on four goals and one assist. She scored goals against Syracuse, Lock Haven, Lafayette and Colgate. She notched one assist against Lehigh.
  • Totaling 24 wins in her career, senior goalie Maddie Henry's nine wins on the season have led her to the runner-up position in Cornell's career record list. She needs two more wins to pass Kelly Johnson (2014-17), who has 25 wins in her career.

    • Natalie Stone (freshman) scored her first collegiate goal.
 

Last Week in Review

  • The Big Red started the week with a 4-0 win against Lehigh on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Junior Juliana Tardif, sophomore Avery Smith, freshman Isabella Palde and freshman Natalie Stone each scored their first goals on the season for the win.
  • Cornell won its second game of the week against Brown, 4-0, for Senior Day. Sophomore Claire Jones notched two goals and two assists, while junior Grace Royer and Smith score the other two goals. Junior Taylor Gladd assisted both of Jones' goals and sophomore Kate MacGillis assisted the first as well. 
  • The Big Red fell, 3-1, to #15 Syracuse on Sunday, Oct. 27. Freshman Bridget Mahoney, assisted by Jones and Gladd, scored the lone goal.
  • Jones and senior goalie Maddie Henry were each named to the Ivy League weekly honor roll on Monday, Oct. 28 for their efforts. 
 

About Princeton

  • Playing 10 ranked teams on the season, Princeton goes into the Cornell game with an 11-4 record on the season. The Tigers four losses come from September against #1 North Carolina, #21 Rutgers, #4 UConn and #4 Maryland, with both the UConn and Maryland games being lost in overtime. Most recently Princeton has played Boston University and #14 Harvard for 3-1 and 3-2 wins, respectively. 
  • Within the Ivy League, Princeton has a 5-0 record after playing #14 Harvard, Brown, Columbia, Yale and Dartmouth. 
  • Junior forward Clara Roth leads the team with 36 points on 13 goals and 10 assists. In the last week, she notched two goals and one assist against Boston U. She scored one goal against Boston U. before collecting one goal and one assist against Harvard.
  • Freshman forward/midfielder Sammy Popper follows with 24 points on nine goals and six points. 
  • Senior goalkeeper Grace Baylis has played all but 150 minutes for the Tigers. In 786:33, Baylis has made 36 saves for a .581 save percentage.
 

The Series vs Princeton

  • The Tigers have dominated the series since the beginning, winning the first five meetings, beginning with a 4-0 victory in 1978.
  • The Big Red's best stretch came from 1983-1990 when Cornell went 4-2-2 with Princeton, but a 2-1 OT Tiger win in 1991 started a 14-game unbeaten streak for Princeton.
  • That streak was closed in 2007 when the Big Red beat Princeton 4-3. Cornell beat the Tigers once again in double overtime, 3-2, in 2016.
  • Princeton won the last two games in 2017 and 2018 to lead the all-time series, 31-6-3.
 

National Appeal

  • The Big Red has eight different states, as well as Canada and South Africa, represented on the team of 23.
  • For the first year New Jersey ties Pennsylvania as the most represented state. Pennsylvania has been the most represented state since 2015. A total of 10 players call New Jersey or Pennsylvania home, five each. The other states with multiple representatives are New York (3) and Texas (2), plus one student-athletes from Connecticut, Maine, Maryland and Texas. 
  • There are three international student-athletes as well, two from British Columbia, Canada
  • and one from South Africa.
  • In addition to our athletes, we have two coaches from California (Hurff and Dempsey), one from Delaware (Orozco) and head coach Andy Smith hails from Doncaster, England.
 

Head Coach Andy Smith

  • After serving as the head coach of the field hockey team at the University of the Pacific, Smith was named the head coach of the Cornell field hockey team in May of 2019. 
  • Smith comes to East Hill after leading the Pacific Tigers to four regular-season conference titles in six seasons. Smith also coached four student-athletes to All-American honors, in addition to five athletes being selected to participate in FIH World level events.
  • Smith brings a new staff of assistant coaches to Cornell this season. Laura Hurff and Johnny Orozco joined the Big Red staff as assistant coaches after successful stints in their respective USA National Teams. Taylor Dempsey joins the team as a volunteer assistant coach after a decorated playing career at the University of the Pacific.

  • The Big Red will travel to Hanover, N.H. to close out the regular season at Dartmouth with a contest to start at noon.
