#4 Women's Ice Hockey Comes Out on Top Against Quinnipiac

12/7/2019 6:01:00 PM

Box Score HAMDEN, Conn. - An amazing team effort led Cornell women's ice hockey to its final victory in 2019. Four different goal scorers, and 11 different point earners, helped the Big Red to a 4-1 victory over Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., Saturday evening.

At 13:13, senior Paige Lewis opened the scoring after dancing around the goalie. After receiving an inserted puck from junior Willow Slobodzian, Lewis took the puck and moved around the goalie to slide it in passed the goal line.

Similar in start but not in finish, Cornell scored a second goal with 10:44 on the second-period clock. Just like Slobodzian's insert, senior Jaime Bourbonnais received a pass from sophomore Sam Burke at the blue line, right next to the boards. Bourbonnais passed the puck to the goalie crease, knowing junior Finley Frechette was ready in the slot. As the puck touched F. Frechette's stick she redirected it right into the goal for a two-goal lead.

Quinnipiac scored its lone goal of the evening with three minutes left in the second period. The Bobcats' leading scorer Coutu-Godbout was able to get the puck past the goal line off a tipped slapshot.

Entering the final period with a one-goal lead, the Big Red tallied two goals in the last 20 minutes of play. Seven minutes and 59 seconds into the third period, senior Kristin O'Neill scored the third goal to earn back Cornell's two-goal lead. Junior Maddie Mills collected the puck from senior Amy Curlew and wrapped around the goal for a shot from behind the net. O'Neill collected the rebound and sent it straight into the net before the Bobcats' netminder found out where the puck had gone.

Sophomore Gillis Frechette tallied the final goal of the evening five minutes later. Senior Grace Graham intercepted a Quinnipiac pass near the Big Red's offensive blue line and took a shot from the face-off mark. As the shot rebounded, G. Frechette collected it for a goal from the bottom corner of the slot.

Cornell killed both Bobcat power plays, but Quinnipiac allowed no penalties leaving the Big Red without any power play opportunities against the Bobcats.

Browning saved 18 of the 19 pucks sent her way, while Cornell outshot Quinnipiac, 41-38.

After a four-week hiatus, the Big Red will return home to host Mercyhurst on January 4 & 5 for a Saturday-Sunday afternoon series.
