NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman
Sarah Campbell turned her third singles victory of the young dual season, but the women's tennis team was handed a 4-1 loss by Dartmouth on Saturday morning in the consolation semifinals of the ECAC Indoor Championships at Heyman-Cullman Tennis Center.
Fifth-seeded Dartmouth (3-4) started off by securing the doubles point, then took four of the six first sets in singles. The Big Green closed out the middle matches to push the lead to 3-0 before Campbell sewed up her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Catherine Cable at No. 5. Campbell improved to 3-3 in singles, which moves her into a tie with classmate
Valerie Ho (3-4) for the team lead in victories.
Meanwhile, the Big Green had forced a third set in the match at No. 6 — though Cornell sophomore
Ana Elhom was ahead in the third set, 3-1, when play was halted. Senior
Mariko Iinuma was in a second-set tiebreaker at No. 2, attempting to force a third set, but the Big Green clinched the match by winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1.
This year's ECAC Indoor Championships are exclusively the eight Ivy League programs. Eighth-seeded Cornell (2-5) will move on to play in the seventh-place match at 8 a.m. Sunday against Harvard, which dropped a 4-3 decision to host Yale on Saturday afternoon.
The match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
