ITHACA, N.Y. -- A bid to the USPA Collegiate Nationals will be on the line for both the Cornell men's and women's polo teams when the Big Red hosts the Northeast Regional Championships this weekend at Oxley Equestrian Center.
The men will open the tournament on Friday, March 8 at 5 p.m. against Skidmore, with Roger Williams and Western Ontario at 7 p.m. in the other semifinal. The winner of the two games will meet on Sunday, March 10 at 10 a.m. The women kick off the event the following day, with Skidmore and Connecticut playing on Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m. The Big Red will face Yale in the second semi at 4 p.m., with the finals the following afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
The Big Red men are 12-3 on the year after suffering a 28-8 loss at Western Ontario in a game played without captain and All-America candidate Lorenzo Masias. Cornell is 2-0 this season against Skidmore, winning a narrow 14-13 contest in October before taking a 30-4 triumph in early February. Cornell has won 23 regional titles in its history, including taking home the trophy 15 times in the last 18 years.
The women, who have won nine of the last 10 regional crowns, will bring an 11-7 overall record into the weekend. The Big Red have met Yale's intercollegiate squad once this season, topping the Bulldogs 28-0 on Nov. 30 at Oxley. Cornell is 5-0 this year against the three teams in its pod, and will need to remain unbeaten in order to claim a 25th regional title in program history. Included in that was last weekend's 25-7 win over UConn in Storrs, Conn.
