Tucker, Diakomihalis, Dean Win EIWA Titles; Big Red Second

VESTAL, N.Y. -- Junior Chas Tucker (133) and sophomore Max Dean (184) each won their first conference title and sophomore Yianni Diakomihalis repeated at 141 pounds as Cornell took second to Lehigh in the team race at the 2019 EIWA Championship on Saturday afternoon at Binghamton's Events Center. Cornell qualified six to the NCAA Championships, placed eight individuals and earned 139 team points, behind only the Mountain Hawks (153).

Senior Ben Honis (197), junior Brandon Womack (184) and freshman Vitali Arujau (125) all finished as EIWA runners-up, with Womack and Arujau dropping two-point decisions and Honis falling by three - all against nationally-ranked top 10 opponents. They were among eight total Big Red wrestlers who placed during the two-day tournament.

Princeton's Patrick Glory got the best of a wild first period that saw both wrestlers earn reversals after Glory got on the board with a takedown. Leading 4-3, the match changed with a tilt for four nearfall for Glory in the second, though a Arujau reversal with five seconds left in the period got the freshman back in the match. Trailing 9-5 after a Glory escape in the third, Arujau picked up a takedown and immediately cut Glory midway through the final period, but could not put additional points on the board until he was awarded a stalling point as the final seconds ticked away in a 10-8 defeat, his first at 125 pounds.

Tucker earned a takedown in every period, including two in the first, and controlled the match at every point as the dangerous Josh Terao of American couldn't solve the sophomore's defense. Terao's four points all came on escapes, but not before Tucker picked up riding time for an extra point to claim his first EIWA title with the 9-4 victory. He didn't allow an offensive point the entire tournament.

Diakomihalis made it back-to-back EIWA titles with a solid 8-2 win over second-seeded and 13th-ranked Nic Gil of Navy. The sophomore used three takedowns and an escape, along with riding time, for a decisive victory. Diakomihalis improved to 3-0 all-time against Gil in the postseason after picking up wins at last year's EIWA semifinals, as well as at NCAAs. Like Tucker, Diakomihalis didn't surrender a takedown during his championship run.

Top-seeded Jordan Kutler of Lehigh used the only takedown of the day with 23 seconds left in the second to capture a 3-1 win over Womack at 174. Womack escaped within five seconds of the third to get within 3-1, but couldn't finish a number of scramble attempts throughout the match, including getting in on a couple of first period shots. It was the third straight EIWA final for Womack, who won a title at 165 pounds as a freshman in 2017.

Dean avenged his 2018 EIWA finals loss to Ryan Preisch of Lehigh with a thorough 3-0 win. After a scoreless first that saw Dean continuously pushing forward and earning a stall warning, Preisch chose bottom to start the second. Dean was able to ride the Mountain Hawks wrestler out, picking up a second stall warning and a penalty point with 30 seconds left in the period. He escaped six seconds into the third and held off Preisch, taking his 1:54 of riding time to close out the 3-0 win.

Honis, who upset Princeton's Patrick Brucki at 197 pounds during the Big Red's dual win earlier this spring, picked up an initial takedown, but his opponent escaped, and picked up a takedown and two back points to take a 5-3 lead into the second. Trailing just 5-4 entering the third, Honis was able to ride Brucki for more than a minute until the Tiger grappler escaped, then picked up a late takedown on a re-attack as the Big Red seniortook a desperation shot to try and square the match.
VESTAL, N.Y. -- Cornell went 6-for-6 in the EIWA semifinals on Saturday morning at Binghamton's Events Center, jumping into first place after the semifinals. The Big Red will head into the championship session trailing Lehigh (136-127) in the team race, with two head-to-head matches in the finals. All six of the Cornell finalists are also now NCAA qualifiers.

Freshman Vitali Arujau rolled past Army West Point's Trey Chalifoux to open the day at 125 pounds with a 13-1 major decision victory. Arujau picked up a takedown 30 seconds in, and piled up more than a minute of riding time to enter the second up 2-1. He escaped immediately after choosing bottom, then countered with a takedown and two nearfall while riding out Chalifoux for the final 1:24 of the period to lead 7-1. A third period takedown, two nearfall and a stalling point, along with riding time, put extra points on the board for Cornell. Arujau will meet 10th-ranked Patrick Glory of Princeton in the finals. The two have met once this season, with the Big Red sophomore earning a second period fall in Cornell's big dual meet win over the Tigers.

Tucker picked up a hard-fought 6-3 win over Lane Peters, the second straight semi victory by a Big Red wrestler over a Black Knight grappler. A second period reversal and a pair of third-period takedowns salted away Tucker's second straight finals appearance at 133 pounds. He will wrestle No. 2 seed Josh Terao of American in the finals while attempting to claim his first Eastern title.

Diakomihalis remained unbeaten with a 14-2 victory over Anthony Sparacio of Binghamton at 141 pounds. The sophomore will look to repeat his crown when he meet No. 2 seed Nic Gil of Navy on Saturday evening. Now 23-0 on the year, Diakomihalis earned four takedowns and four nearfall points in the third to ease into the finals.

Womack will compete in the first of two consecutive finals matches pitting Cornell and Lehigh grapplers when he meets No. 1 seed Jordan Kutler for the title at 174 pounds. Womack dropped Princeton's Travis Stefanik in the semis by a 6-2 score after the Tiger grappler opened the match with the first takedown. A second period reversal and a hard ride put Womack into his third EIWA final. He won the 2017 title at 165 pounds.

Dean will compete in his second straight EIWA final against Lehigh's Ryan Preisch, the defending champion at 184 pounds, after picking up an 8-4 triumph over Brown's CJ LaFragola in the semifinals. The sophomore surrendered a pair of first period takedowns, but dominated the final two period, continually pushing forward and earning a pair of stalling points. He earned 1:37 of riding time after picking up two points early in the third to pick up the win.

Honis overcame a slow start to nearly pick up the major at 197 pounds to earn a second shot at Princeton's Patrick Brucki, who the senior topped earlier in the season in a dual meet. He ran out of time while looking for the major against Drew Phipps in the semis, picking up a 13-7 win over the Bucknell grappler, piling up three takedowns in the final minute of the match.

Both Jeramy Sweany and Andrew Berreyesa dropped to the seventh place match after losing tough consolation matches, with Sweany picking up a 4-0 win over Daniel Herman of Columbia. Berreyesa, who placed in his first Eastern championship, fell to Columbia's Laurence Kasoy.
