Women's Lacrosse Upset Bid Comes Up Short Against #5 Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Olivia Jensen registered a career-high five goals, but the Cornell women's lacrosse team fell to No. 5 Syracuse, 16-13, Tuesday evening in the Carrier Dome. Ellie Walsh also recorded a career-high four goals in the decision.
 
The Big Red (8-5) got off to quick start with early contributions from both Jensen and Walsh. Walsh gave the Big Red the early 2-0 advantage with two tallies in the first 1:11 of the contest before Jensen netted two straight to put the Big Red up 4-0.
 
The Orange (14-3) answered back with two quick goals of its own to cut the Big Red's lead back to two.
 
Shannon Brazier came up with an impressive goal to push the Big Red's lead back to three. After Shannon Bertscha's initial attempt was turned away by Syracuse goalkeeper Asa Goldstock. Brazier extended to corral the high rebound. In one swift motion she collected the ball and snapped it home to put the Big Red ahead 5-2.
 
Syracuse scored three unanswered goals before Jensen netted her third of the contest with 3:48 remaining to put the Big Red back ahead 6-5. The Orange evened things up with a late goal from Sam Swart to knot the score at six heading into the half.
 
The Orange scored four of the second half's first five goals to jump to the 10-7 advantage just under 10 minutes into the half.
 
The Big Red cut the Orange's lead to one with two goals in the matter of 45 seconds from Caroline Allen and Tomasina Leska, respectively.
 
Syracuse regained its two-goal padding with a goal from Morgan Alexander just 42 seconds after Leska cut the lead to one, making the score 11-9.
 
Cornell responded with a three goals within a span of 1:41, which put it ahead 12-11. Jensen started the spurt, cashing in on a free position chance. Shannon Brazier scored just 15 seconds later to even things up at 11 before Jensen netted her fifth of the game with 12:33 left.
 
Syracuse then went on a 4-0 scoring run to make the score 15-12 in favor of the Orange.
 
Allen registered an unassisted goal with 2:44 remaining to make it a two-goal game, but Syracuse's Meaghan Tyyrell registered the contests final tally with 1:31 left.
 
Katie McGahan made the start in net. The junior goalkeeper registered nine saves on evening.  
 
The Big Red returns to Ivy League action this weekend when it takes on No. 20 Dartmouth on the road at 1 p.m. Saturday.
