PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Freshman Valerie Ho won her 10th singles match of the season after the women's tennis team took the doubles point down to the wire, but Brown won a three-set match at No. 4 singles to clinch a 4-1 victory over Cornell on Saturday at Pizzitola Sports Center.
 
Senior Mariko Iinuma and freshman Katherine Nguyen teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles match in a tiebreaker, putting the balance of the day's first point on the No. 2 tandems. Brown's pairing of Alessandro Bianco and Juliana Simon – ranked sixth among Ivy League doubles teams – eked out a 7-5 victory to give the hosts the early lead.
 
With just four indoor courts at the facility, the top four matches led off singles play. Ho tied the score at 1 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3, improving her singles record to 10-6. Brown (9-9, 1-1 Ivy) countered with a straight-set win at the top spot and a win second-set tiebreaker at No. 2 for a 3-1 advantage.
 
Freshman Maria Adiaconitei fought back to force a third set at No. 4, which allowed the bottom two singles matches to get started. But the Bears ended up prevailing in that third set to clinch the match
 
Cornell (6-11, 0-2) continues Ivy League play at 1 p.m. Sunday, when it visits Yale. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
