Three Event Titles Lead Women's Gymnastics to Second Place at Tumble and Rumble

ITHACA, N.Y. - Junior Amy Shen (bars), junior Madison Smith (floor) and senior Samantha Henry (floor) won individual event titles as the Cornell women's gymnastics team earned second overall in the first ever Cornell Tumble and Rumble, a combined meet with wrestling, Sunday afternoon.
 
The Big Red totaled 189.775 points, which was 0.025 points less than first-place Brockport State and 0.75 points more than third-place Cortland State. Ithaca College earned 188.625 points for fourth place.
 
The team earned first place finishes on the beam (47.775) and the floor (48.675) while Cortland took home the bars title (47.475) and Ithaca took home the vault title (47.600). 
 
Cornell notched five top-three performances along with eight total top-five finishes in the quad meet. 
 
The Big Red started the meet on the vault. Senior Samantha Henry led the team with a fourth-place 9.575 while freshman Amy Krueger finished fifth with her 9.55 on vault.
 
The second rotation found Cornell on the bars. Junior Olivia Tometich led off the Big Red with her bars routine. Following her dismount, the third-year scored a 9.675, matching her personal record, for the eventual third-place finish. Shen's scored an early-meet 9.8 on the bars. With none of the other competitors able to top her score, the junior earned the individual title.
 
On the beam, junior Izzy Herczeg led the Big Red. Her 9.675 served as Cornell's top finish for sixth place. Freshman Victoria DeMeo tied for seventh with a personal record 9.650.
 
Cornell finished the meet on the floor in true Big Red fashion. As the meet came to a close, Cornell earned three scores above 9.8 on floor. Junior Madison Smith and Henry tied for first, with Emma Schulz from Cortland, with an 9.875. Smith matched her previous personal record in order to get the first place finish. Sophomore Sara Maughan closed out the Big Red scorers as she nailed her floor routine for an 9.825, good for second place overall. Herczeg closed out Cornell's top-five performances with her fifth place 9.6 on floor.
 
The Big Red returns to action in Newman Arena for an early meet on Sunday, Feb. 23. Cornell will host Brown, Penn., and Yale for the 11 a.m. Ivy Classic Championships.
