ITHACA, N.Y. – No. 21 Princeton may have defeated the Cornell women's basketball team, 69-50, on Saturday evening at Newman Arena, but the Big Red seniors fought until the bitter end, scoring 48 of Cornell's 50 points in their final game in a Big Red uniform.
On the Big Red's senior night, Cornell seniors Laura Bagwell-Katalinich, Dylan Higgins, Danielle Jorgenson, Reena Olsen, Stephanie Umeh, and Samantha Widmann were determined to not Cornell go down without a fight against the No. 21 ranked Tigers. Higgins, Jorgenson, Olsen, Umeh, and Widmann, a class that came to Cornell together four years ago and has stuck like glue since, all got the starting nod for the Big Red on Saturday evening, and they delivered.
After one quarter of play, the Big Red only trailed Princeton by three points, 17-14. The Big Red went 7-of-12 (58.3%) from the field in the first quarter in 10 minutes of play that purely featured the Cornell seniors. Widmann and Bagwell-Katalinich each notched four first quarter points, while Higgins, Umeh, and Olsen all put points on the board as well.
The Big Red continued to hang through the first three minutes of the second quarter, maintaining a three-point deficit, 21-18, with 7:25 remaining in the half. Princeton picked up speed, however, closing the half on an 11-2 run to carry a 32-20 lead into the locker room.
The Tigers used a strong third quarter to extend its lead to 19 through 30 minutes of play, outscoring the Big Red, 23-16, in the frame to claim a 55-36 lead. However, just as this class of six seniors has throughout their entire careers, the Big Red gave it everything that they had until the final buzzer sounded. By the end of the game, every single Cornell senior had scored, each soaking up their final moments in the spotlight. Although Princeton came out on top, 69-50, it was the Cornell seniors who were applauded by the crowd for the four years of hard work and dedication that they gave to the Big Red women's basketball program.
The Big Red were led by none other than Bagwell-Katalinich (14) and Widmann (13), who both finished the contest in double figures. Bagwell-Katalinich closes out her Big Red career having scored in double digits in 42 of the 52 games that she played in a Cornell uniform. Widmann stands 12th all-time in Cornell women's basketball history in career points, tallying 1,159 points over the past four years. Bagwell-Katalinich also chipped in seven rebounds on Saturday evening, helping Cornell out-rebound Princeton, 38-32.
Jorgenson filled the stat sheet, finishing the game with seven points, four steals, three assists, and two rebounds. Higgins and Umeh each recorded six points, and Higgins added a game- and career-high eight rebounds. Olsen scored a basket and corralled three boards, but more importantly, she consistently found her open teammates, posting three assists.
The Cornell women's basketball team finishes the 2019-20 campaign with a 10-16 overall record and 3-11 mark in Ivy League play.
