Heavyweight Rowing Returns to Competition for First Race Since 2019

5/7/2021 1:00:00 PM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's heavyweight rowing program will return to the waters of the Cayuga Inlet when it meets Hobart and Marist on Saturday, May 8.

Three boats will race for the Big Red, with the first varsity eight launching at 11:35 a.m. Also racing for Cornell is the second varsity eight at 12:00 p.m. and the third varsity eight at 12:25 p.m. Times are subject to change due to potential weather conditions.

The heavyweight crew is the first Big Red varsity athletics program to return to competition during the 2020-21 academic year. This event is the first live sporting competition hosted by Cornell since March 8, 2020. Cornell's men's heavyweight crew last competed in the fall of 2019.

"We are the first competition that Cornell athletics has had in over a year so we are so thankful first of all that it's even happening," said Todd Kennett, the Spirit of '57 Director of Rowing and Head Coach of Heavyweight Rowing. "The number of people that worked to make this a reality goes all the way up to the President's office. We're thankful that they have allowed our student-athletes to race under the most normal circumstances possible while still staying safe."

No spectators, parents, friends, alumni, or non-tested competitors will be admitted into any part of the Cornell University Rowing Center. Testing and other COVID protocols are in place for the teams, coaches and staff.

Cornell's heavyweight rowing team intends on competing at the 2021 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship, held May 28-29 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
