ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sprint football team wil attempt to pick up its first win of the 2022 season when Penn visits Schoellkopf Field on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Barry Leonard on the call.
The Big Red is 0-3 on the season and has been outscored 169-14, though two of the losses have come to perennial CSFL contenders Army West Point and Navy on the road.
Xavier Martinez leads the Big Red offense with 371 passing yards and two touchdowns while completing 47 percent of his passes, with his favorite target being
Luke Verzella (nine catches, 150 yards, one touchdown).
Ralph Fleuranvil (104 yards) and
Jacob Wynkoop (59 yards) for a two-headed rushing attack.
Colton Kotecki is averaging 28.3 yards on seven kickoff returns and has caught two passes for 56 more. Defensively,
Will Anderson (28 tackles),
Billy Turner (22 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss) and
Kai Mulligan (16 tackles) lead the Big Red in tackles, while
Jaden Queen has a team-best three pass breakups.
Penn, under head coach Jerry McConnell, is 2-2 on the season with wins over Alderson Broaddus (30-7) and Chestnut Hill (9-6), as well as defeats at the hands of Saint Thomas Aquinas (21-17) and Army West Point (40-0). The offense has revolved around the passing game, as 946 of its 1060 yards have come through the air as Andrew Paolini has five touchdowns and just one interception. The receiving tandem of Brandon Graves (14 receptions, 308 yards, four touchdowns) and Jake Wang (21 receptions, 295 yards, one touchdown) have combined for 35 catches and 603 yards with all five scores. Adrian Montemayor paces a defense allowing just 279.8 yards per game with 19 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble in four contests.
Cornell leads the all-time series 57-44 in advance of the 102nd all-time meeting between the programs dating back to 1938, though the Quakers have claimed eight straight victories, including the last two by a combined score of 124-7. Penn won the 2021 contest 63-0 in Philadelphia.
