NEW YORK – With the Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal Championships now less than two weeks away, junior hurdler Christian Martin continues to trend in the right direction, turning in another impressive 60-meter hurdles performance on the second and final day of the Rutgers Open on Saturday at The Armory.
Martin finished second in the 60-meter hurdles in a personal-best 7.91, dropping time for the fifth time in six meets this season. His mark sits second in the Ivy League so far this season and also ranks fourth all-time in Cornell history.
Martin also ran the first leg of Cornell's winning 4x400-meter relay, teaming up with freshman Fabien De Silva, freshman Jack Daly, and sophomore Tomas Kersulis to cross the finish line first in 3:14.50. Kersulis' strong indoor campaign continued on Saturday, and after winning the 400-meter on Friday, he placed second in the 200-meter with a time of 21.61.
Four additional Big Red competitors notched top-five finishes in their respective events. On the track, sophomore Sam Young placed third in the 600-meter (1:20.67) and freshman Damian Hackett finished fourth in the 800-meter (1:52.69) in what was both athletes' first time competing in each race collegiately.
Junior Jelani Williams and freshman Otreyvien Taylor represented Cornell well in the jumps, as Williams placed fifth in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 14.42m (47-03.75) and Taylor finished fifth in the high jump after clearing 2.00m (6-06.75), a mark which was just off his collegiate-best.
Competing in the championship flight of the event, senior Dan Mead placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 16.69m (54-09.25).
The Cornell men's track and field team will return home to host the Deneault Invite on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Barton Hall in Ithaca, N.Y. in what will be the Big Red's final tune-up before Heps on Feb. 26-27 at The Armory in New York.
