200 IM Group Shows Depth on Day Two of Ivy Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Cornell men's swimming and diving team showed its depth in the 200 IM on the second day of the 2022 Ivy League Championships on Thursday at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool, qualifying five student-athletes for a final, three of which posted Cornell all-time top-10 marks.

Senior Ricardo Martinez was the Big Red's top finisher in the event, making the B Final and placing 10th overall with the second-fastest time in the Cornell record books (1:46.63). Freshman Sebastian Wolff headlined four Big Red swimmers in the C Final of the 200 IM, winning the heat in 1:47.59. Jacob Bass (1:47.98) placed 20th, Paige daCosta (1:48.71) finished 22nd, and Jack Valiquette (1:49.19) placed 24th. Bass' time is good for sixth all-time in Cornell history, while Valiquette's time of 1:48.18 in prelims sits seventh all-time.

Sophomore Matthew Warren and freshman Soodong Kim made the consolation final of the 1-meter diving competition in their first Ivy Championship action, with Warren placing 15th with 262.40 points and Kim finishing one spot behind in 16th with 247.70 points. Kim's point total of 271.35 from prelims ranks eighth all-time in Cornell history.

Will Taner and Jake Lawson made the C Final of their respective freestyle events, with Taner finishing 22nd in the 50 freestyle (20.56) and Lawson placing 22nd in the 500 freestyle (4:26.65). Lawson's time of 4:26.25 from prelims improves him to fifth all-time in the Big Red record books.

Through two days of competition, Cornell sits in seventh place with 160 points. Day three of the 2022 Ivy League Championships will commence tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the prelims session.
