Samuel King tied for medalist honors as the Cornell men's golf team shaved two shots off its first round score to take sixth overall at the Battle at Rum Pointe on Sunday afternoon. The Big Red finished with a two-day total of a 594, with King leading with his four-under-par 140 at the Rum Pointe Golf Course.
King was out front of the pack after the first 18 holes and came back strong on Sunday, though Jordan Brajcich of Rhode Island was able to match his score after shooting a 71. They were both one shot clear of Bucknell's Jason Lohwater and Bryson Richards of Rhode Island. It is King's second top five individual finish, joining a fourth-place effort at the Carpetbagger Classic earlier this month.
Cornell shot 298-296 in its two rounds, finishing 18-over on the par-72 course. The Big Red was one stroke out of third in a bunched up grouping. Rhode Island ended -1 with a score of 575 over its 36 holes.
August Lascola jumped 24 spots from day one to two, as his 73 gave him a 150, good for 27th out of 120 golfers.
Martin Gutierrez (43rd, 77-75-152) and
Benjamin Choe (54th, 78-75-153) joined Lascola in lowering their first day totals, while
Josh Lundmark matched his first day score to finish 64th overall (77-77-154).
The Big Red completes its regular season schedule when it competes at the Princeton Invitational beginning on Friday, April 8 at the Springdale Golf Club.

Samuel King's opening round 67 has him two shots up on the field after day one at the Battle at Rum Pointe as Cornell sits sixth as a team. Cornell will play a final 18 holes on Sunday at the Rum Pointe Golf Course while attempting to climb the 22-team ladder.
King's five-under-par 67 is two shots better than Bucknell's Jason Lohwater and the Rhode Island tandem of Bryan Richards and Jordan Brajcich in the 120-golfer field. He's the lone Big Red golfer in the top 50 after day one, with
Josh Lundmark,
Martin Gutierrez and August Lascola all grouped together in 51st place after shooting opening round 77s, and
Benjamin Choe one shot back in 64th after carding a 78.
Cornell shot a solid 298 and is just four strokes out of second. Rhode Island leads the field with a 3-under-pat 285 and is nine shots ahead of second place Rider. Second through eighth place are separated by just five shots after 18 holes.
