PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Penn kept the Cornell bats at bay and the middle of a hit-hitting Quaker lineup did the Big Red in, sweeping Saturday's doubleheader with 10-1 and 10-4 wins at Meiklejohn Stadium. Cornell fell to 7-17 (3-8 Ivy), with Penn improving to 21-9 (8-2 Ivy).
Penn's Wyatt Henseler was 6-for-10 with two doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and four runs scored in the doubleheader sweep, while Cornell had just 10 total hits in the two contests.
Game 1
Cornell got on the board in the first on a
Max Jensen RBI groundout, but Penn put up crooked numbers in the first and second and never looked back.
The game sat at 6-2 for three innings before the Quakers tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, then again in the eighth.
The Big Red had four total hits, hit apiece for
Wils Guy and
Jason Apostle. Guy also stole a base.
Luke Yacinich went 5.0 innings of work in the start, allowing five hits and four earned runs while striking out eight.
Kevin Easley improved to 4-1 on the mound for Penn, striking out eight and allowing four hits and the sole run over 5.0 innings. Wyatt Henseler was 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBI with three runs scored to lead the Penn offense.
Game 2
Wyatt Henseler picked up where he left off in game one, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and five RBI as the Quakers picked up the Saturday sweep. Jackson Appel was 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
Joe Miller picked up the win for Penn after going 7.0 innings, scattering five hits and surrendering just one earned run with seven strikeouts.
Cornell's
Spencer Edwards earned the start, scattering five hits over 5.0 innings with three strikeouts. Six different Big Red hitters had singles, with
Ryan Ross and
Max Jensen each reach base twice, adding walks to their singles.
The Big Red closes out the series when the two teams meet on Sunday, April 17 at noon.
