TAMPA, Fla. -- Tomas Kersulis won two events, including setting a school record in the 400 meters, to lead the Cornell track and field team on day one of the South Florida Invitational on Friday, April 8.

Kersulis won the 200 dash less than an hour after besting Olympian Bruno Hortelano's record of 46.60, shaving .08 off the mark with a 46.52. His time bested a pair of Florida State runners, DaeQwan Butler (46.81) and Alex Collier (47.09).

Ian Frost led two Big Red hammer throwers in the top five, taking the runner-up spot with his toss of 59.05m (193-8). Brad Morell (52.26m, 171-5) finished fifth, then bounced back to squeak out a win in the shot put with a 17.27m toss (56-8), a half-inch ahead of runner-up Johann Jeremiah of South Florida.

Charles Smith grabbed a pair of top five finishes - in the long jump with a leap of 7.16m (23-6), good for fourth, and in the high jump in third (1.97, 6-5 1/2). Smith finished behind teammate Otreyvien Taylor, who equaled the 1.97m (6-5 1.2) that Smith also registered.

Cornell posted a 2-3-4-5 finish in the pole vault with Shane Racey's second place hoist of 4.95m (16-2 3/4) leading the Big Red pack. Johannes Stromhaug and Dylan Rodgers went 3-4 with equal heights of 4.80m (15-9).

The javelin tandem of Drew Altemose (59.75m, 196-0) and Chase Chandler (58.98, 193-6) finished first and second in the event, while Darius Scott (14.07m, 46-2) and Jelani Williams (14.00m, 45-11 1/4) were third and fifth, respectively, in the triple jump.

Derek Amicom was second in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:42.07) and Jake Gelfand (4:02.50) finished in the same spot in the 1,500 meters. San Young was the team's top finisher in the 800 run with a fourth in 1:55.36.

Cornell had a number of wins on the track in the second half of the meet, including by Christian Martin in the 110 hurdles (13.88, No. 6 all-time at Cornell) and Kersulis in the 200 (20.80, No. 3 all-time at Cornell) and the school record showing in the 400, the former by just .01 over Florida State's Amir Willis. Martin also took second in the 400 hurdles (54.28), not far ahead of teammate Billy Powers (55.42) in fourth.

The Big Red will compete in the Bison Outdoor Classic beginning on Friday, April 15 in Lewisburg, Pa.
