Penn, Princeton On Deck for Women's Tennis This Weekend

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell women's tennis team returns to Ivy League play this weekend with a pair of matches against Penn and No. 48-ranked Princeton this weekend.

Winners in three of its last four matches, Cornell (4-11) will host Penn (10-5, 0-1 Ivy) on Friday at the Reis Tennis Center before heading to Princeton (10-6, 1-0 Ivy) to take on the Tigers on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Junior Lauren Stein has won her last five matches, which is the longest active streak by a Big Red player. Sophomore Lan Mi (four games) and freshman Tanya Fan (three games) also have win streaks of at least three matches.

Mi has a team-leading 12 wins this season in dual matches, all of which have come at the No. 1 position. Stein has seven of Cornell's nine wins at the No. 2 singles spot.

In doubles action, Stein and sophomore Alexandra Savu have won a Cornell-leading five matches this season.

Scouting Penn

Penn is coming off a 4-1 loss to Princeton last Saturday at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Centers in Philadelphia. The loss was Penn's first at home this season, as the Quakers are 8-1 on the year at home and 2-4 away from the City of Brotherly Love.

Sabine Rutlauka had her 11-match win streak in the spring snapped last Saturday as Rutlauka retired in the first set after the first two points.

Maya Urata and Gavriella Smith are both tied for the second-highest win total for Penn in the spring (9). Maya Urata is right behind with eight wins.

Urata and Iris Gallo have an 11-2 record in doubles matches this spring, including an impressive 7-2 mark at the No. 2 doubles spot.

Cornell fell to Penn, 4-1, in the ECAC Indoor Championships on Feb. 12 in Lebanon, N.H. The lone Big Red point came from Stein, who coasted past Eileen Wang, 6-0, 6-1, in the No. 2 singles match.

The Big Red is looking to snap its five-match losing streak to Penn. Cornell has not defeated the Quakers since posting a 5-2 victory on April 15, 2016 in Philadelphia. The last win on home court for Cornell over Penn came on April 21, 2013, in a 4-3 victory.

Scouting Princeton

Princeton, who ranks No. 48 nationally, enters this weekend on a modest two-match win streak, having defeated Temple on March 24 and Penn last weekend.

The Tigers are 5-1 at home this season, with the lone setback coming to Michigan, 5-2, on Feb. 18.

Daria Frayman has an 11-1 record in matches at the No. 1 position this season. Frayman's 11 wins are the highest by a Princeton player this season.

Neha Velaga has split her time between the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots, posting a combined 8-5 record.

Princeton's tandems of Leena Bennetto and Zoe Howard, along with Eva Elbaz and Velaga have won five doubles matches apiece this season.

Cornell is looking to snap a five-match losing streak to the Tigers, as the Big Red's last victory came on April 7, 2017, in a 6-1 triumph at the Tigers' home court.

Looking Ahead

Following this weekend's matches, Cornell will welcome Harvard and Dartmouth to the Reis Tennis Center for a pair of 1 p.m. matches on April 15 and 16.
