SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The No. 7-ranked Syracuse heavyweight rowing team retained the Goes Trophy, marking the Orange's fourth consecutive victory over Navy and Cornell, while picking up the Stagg Trophy for the fifth straight time on Saturday morning.
Winners of three of the five races held on the Lake Outlet, which connects the Seneca River to Onondaga Lake, Syracuse posted victories in the first three varsity eight races before the No. 14-ranked Big Red picked up its second straight in the fourth varsity eight. No. 12-ranked Navy's lone win of the day came in the lone varsity four race held.
Hosting its first Goes Trophy race since 2018, Syracuse opened the day off by retaining the trophy named in honor of Clifford (Tip) Goes, who was a coxswain at Syracuse and was a veteran referee and long-time chairman of the U.S. Olympic Rowing Committee. The Orange logged a time of 5:40.6, finishing nearly six seconds ahead of Navy and was ahead 8.4 seconds faster than Cornell, who finished the 2000-meter course in 5:48.0.
It was Syracuse's first Goes Trophy victory on home waters since 2006.

A LOOK UPSTREAM
Cornell will return to the Cornell Rowing Center for its final three races before EARC Sprints. The first race the Big Red will host will be next Saturday, April 27, when it welcomes Princeton and Yale to East Hill for the annual Carnegie Cup race.
Yale has placed first in each of the last eight Carnegie Cup races, despite being disqualified in the 2022 event in New Haven, Conn., leading to Princeton earning its first title since 2013. Cornell, which will be hosting its first Carnegie Cup since 2018, will be vying for its first Carnegie Cup since 2012, when it was also held on the Cayuga Inlet.
