ITHACA, N.Y. — The Matthews Trophy and Leonard Cup have returned to the possession of the Cornell men's lightweight rowing team as the Big Red claimed both trophies on home water at the Cayuga Inlet on Saturday morning.
Both teams had to battle a headwind of around 12-13 mph and some current flow that lead to some rolling waves in the second-half of the 2000-meter course.
Cornell posted victories in the second, third, and fourth varsity eights to edge Penn from retaining both trophies for another year. Harvard, who entered the rave as the top-ranked lightweight program in the country, took home a first-place finish in the first varsity eight race, finishing 2.1 seconds ahead of the Big Red (5:59.7) with its time of 5:57.8.
The Big Red's second varsity eight won by 2.2 seconds with its 6:09.8 time, finishing ahead of Penn (6:12.0) and Harvard (6:18.7). Cornell cruised to victories over Penn in the third and fourth varsity eights by 10.9 and 23.9 seconds, respectively.
