AKRON, OHIO - The Cornell men's swimming and diving team finished day two of the Zippy Invitational in first place with 788 points. Day two was highlighted by a sweep of the top five places in the 500-yard freestyle and five finalists in the 200-yard individual medley.
Cornell produced one of the meet's signature results in the 500 free, where senior
Pietro Ubertalli claimed the event title in 4:23.82. He was followed by
Julian Correa (4:27.62), freshman
Duke Garvin (4:29.51),
Owen Dankert (4:32.27), and
Jacques Grove (4:33.25), completing a sweep of the top five finishing positions. The Big Red added another major scoring surge in the 200 IM, placing five swimmers in the championship final, led by
Gabe Anagnoson in third (1:46.20),
Haihan Xu in fourth (1:47.03), Clay Caputo in fifth (1:47.25),
Will Chen in sixth (1:47.38), and
Phillip Osadsky in seventh (1:47.40).
Cornell continued to produce in the sprint events, with sophomore
Josh Toothman placing third in the 50 free (19.92) and senior
Daniel Simoes finishing fourth (19.94). The Big Red closed the night with a third-place result in the 400-yard medley relay, as
Blake Conway, Xu, Simoes, and Grove combined for a 3:13.29.
