WEST HAVEN, Conn. — An extra-innings win in the opening game and seven unanswered runs in the nightcap ignited the Cornell baseball team (7-6, 2-0 Ivy League), sweeping Saturday's doubleheader from George H.W. Bush '48 Field from Yale (12-5, 0-2 Ivy League) to snap the Bulldogs' nine-game winning streak.
Cornell, winners of its last four games, is off to its first 2-0 start in Ivy League play since sweeping an April 2, 2016, doubleheader against Harvard at Hoy Field.
The Big Red's offense catalyzed Saturday's success, mashing 27 hits and scoring 20 runs. Nine of the Big Red's 27 hits came on extra-base hits (eight doubles, one home run). After posting 17 hits in the opener and 10 in the nightcap, Cornell has at least 10 hits in each of its last four games.
GAME ONE RECAP
Senior left fielder
John Quinlan's one-out RBI single up the middle in the top of the 10th inning broke open a 12-12 tie to guide Cornell to a 13-12 victory in 10 innings, snapping Yale's nine-game win streak and handing the Bulldogs their first home loss of the season.
Quinlan was one of three players with three-hit games, joined by senior infielder
Max Jensen and senior two-way player,
Ryan Porter, who was the winning pitcher in addition to going 3-for-6 at the plate with a home run.
Yale scored 12 runs on just seven hits, with Jack Dauer and Max Imhoff each tallying two base hits apiece. Dauer drove in six Yale runs, which included hitting the game-tying grand slam while the Bulldogs were down to their final out to force extra innings.
GAME TWO RECAP
After falling behind 3-0 at the end of the first inning, Cornell scored the game's next seven runs en route to its 7-4 victory to sweep Saturday's doubleheader.
Senior two-way player
William Jaun led Cornell offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI double.
John Quinlan chipped in a pair of hits and drove in two runs, including a sixth-inning RBI double. Porter continued his torrid stretch, going 2-for-5 with a double and third-inning RBI single.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher
Huxley Holcombe posted his first victory of the season, pitching a career-high six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with five walks issued and four strikeouts. Freshman southpaw
Sam Keene earned his first career save, pitching the final three innings and did not allow a hit despite yielding one run.
