Women's Tennis Looks to Build on Fall Success in Spring Opener

| By:
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's tennis team will kick off its spring slate when it visits Syracuse on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 11 a.m. at Drumlins Country Club. The contest will kick off a 20-match spring schedule for the Big Red.

Interim Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis Spencer Furman returns a balanced lineup that gained valuable experience during a competitive fall season, highlighted by strong individual performances at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships and Ivy League Conference Masters events.

Freshman Dylan Gelber emerged as one of the Big Red's most consistent performers in the fall, posting a team-best 9-3 singles record while advancing to the main draw at regionals. Sophomore Sage Loudon and junior Victoria Zhao each reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, earning berths in the ITA East Sectional Championships and establishing themselves near the top of the lineup entering the spring.

Sophomore Andrea Martinez De Los Rios (6-5) and senior Emma Baker (3-6) also logged significant tournament action in the fall, while junior Michelle Ryndin (4-6) added depth and experience throughout the lineup. As a team, Cornell posted a 38-41 singles mark during fall tournament play, facing a steady slate of regional and Ivy League competition.

In doubles, the Big Red experimented with multiple pairings during the fall, producing a 14-16 overall record. The tandem of Baker and Zhao went unbeaten (2-0), while Gelber paired with Martinez De Los Rios to post a 2-2 mark. Loudon and Baker also found success together, finishing 2-1.

The Orange leads the all-time series 29-10 and has won 10 consecutive matches dating back to the Big Red's last victory, a 4-3 Cornell triumph on Feb. 27, 2009. Nine of those meetings have come in Syracuse, including last season's 6-1 Orange win.

The Big Red will be back in action at Rutgers on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 5 p.m. The Scarlet Knights lead the all-time series 12-8, including a narrow 4-3 victory in Ithaca during the 2023-24 campaign.
