Women's Tennis Looks To Get Back To Winning Ways, Meets UB, FDU

| By:
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's tennis team will look to get back to its winning ways when it visits Buffalo and hosts Fairleigh Dickinson this weekend. The Big Red will meet the Bulls on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 1:30 p.m. at Miller Tennis Center, then will welcome the Knights on Sunday, March 1 at 11:30 a.m. at the Reis Tennis Center.

The Big Red, ranked No. 69 nationally in the latest ITA poll, sports a 3-5 record on the season after finishing sixth at the ECAC Indoor Championships, including a 4-3 victory over Dartmouth and a tight 4-2 loss to Columbia. Cornell also owns wins over St. Bonaventure (7-0) and Niagara (6-1) this spring. The Big Red will be attempting to snap a three-game skid.

Interim Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis Spencer Furman returns a balanced lineup that gained valuable experience during a competitive fall season, highlighted by strong individual performances at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships and Ivy League Conference Masters events.

Sophomore Sage Loudon (9-9) and junior Michelle Ryndin (6-8) have played in the top spot in the lineup with junior Victoria Zhao (8-9), sophomore Andrea Martinez de los Rios (10-6) and freshman Dylan Gelber (12-5) also mainstays in the lineup. Martina Marica (3-7), Emma Baker (3-10) and Tanya Fan (5-6) have also earned time in dual matches so far this spring.

Buffalo is 12-1 this season, including 12-0 at home, entering a match on Friday at Cleveland State. Esmee Andersen sports a 15-6 overall record, including 9-2 in the top spot in the lineup, while Maria Glowacka (15-5), Sarah Hartel (15-2), Julia Laspro (14-3) and Sofia Zagumennova (16-1) have each won at least 14 matches. Overall, UB has a 101-22 record in singles play this season under head coach Kristen Maines. Cornell leads the all-time series 8-3 and has won two straight, including a 4-0 sweep last spring.

The Knights have a 3-3 record entering Wednesday's non-league matchup at Columbia and are riding a two-game win streak. Head coach Alex Cole's team is led at the top of the lineup by Anastasia Lim (9-7) and Sophia Fredericks-McKee (14-7). Cornell has won all six previous meetings between the teams, including a 5-2 Big Red triumph in the last meeting on March 2, 2014 in Ithaca.
