ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell opened competition at the Big Red Invitational on Saturday at the Kane Sports Complex, with a limited schedule highlighting the first four events of the women's heptathlon. Due to windy conditions, select events were moved inside Barton Hall.
The heptathlon standings feature a field of six competitors, with Cornell's Sade Falese sitting in fifth place with 2,324 points after day one.
Falese opened the day in the 100m hurdles, placing sixth with a time of 16.33 in her first time competing in the event. She followed with a fifth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.40m, and added a fourth-place showing in the shot put with a mark of 8.15m.
She closed out the day with her top performance in the 200 meters, placing third with a time of 26.8.
"Sade brought good energy and is competing well in her first ever heptathlon," head coach Mike Henderson said. "She almost PR'd in three of the four events from today and completed the first 100m hurdle race of her life. She has the potential for a strong day two with her long jump and 800 tomorrow, so it could be an exciting weekend for her."
Henderson also expressed optimism for the remainder of the meet as the full slate of events gets underway Sunday.
"For the team as a whole, we are very much looking forward to getting out and competing well at our only home meet of the season," Henderson said. "After some solid performances in Florida, we are looking to take another step forward this weekend. There is good competition at the meet, but I think we should be able to collect a lot of wins this weekend, both on the track and in the field."
The heptathlon will conclude Sunday as part of a full day of competition. Day two of the Big Red Invitational is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the Kane Sports Complex. The full meet day schedule can be found
