ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's tennis team kicks off its Ivy League home slate when it welcomes Yale (Saturday, April 4) and Brown (Sunday, April 5) this weekend at Reis Tennis Center. Both matches start at 1 p.m. and will be streamed on Stretch Internet.
The Big Red sports a 7-7 record on the season under Interim Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis
Spencer Furman following its second narrow loss of the season to nationally-ranked Columbia this past weekend in its Ivy opener. Cornell owns wins over Dartmouth (4-3), Buffalo (5-2) and UConn (4-3) this spring, among others. The team's balanced lineup has gained valuable experience during a competitive fall season, highlighted by strong individual performances at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships and Ivy League Conference Masters events.
Sophomore
Sage Loudon (13-11) and junior
Michelle Ryndin (10-9) have played in the top spot in the lineup with junior
Victoria Zhao (11-9), sophomore Andrea Martinez de los Rios (13-6) and freshman
Dylan Gelber (15-8) also mainstays in the lineup. Martinez de los Rios has a team-high seven-match win streak entering the week. Loudon and Ryndin have a team-best six wins together in doubles from their spot at No. 1
At 14-2 on the season (1-0 Ivy), No. 50 Yale owns victories over Memphis, Purdue, Rutgers and South Florida, as well as an ECAC Indoor Championship, in head coach Rachel Sapir-Kahan's fifth season on the sidelines for the Bulldogs. Yale enters the week on a five-match win streak overall with six consecutive wins over the Big Red, including a 4-1 decision last season in New Haven, Conn. The Bulldogs hold a commanding 40-9 edge in the series with the Big Red's last victory coming in 2018, a 5-2 victory that capped a four-game win streak. Yale's doubles team of Orly Ogilvy and Leena Friedman is ranked No. 35 nationally and sport an 18-7 record together this year. Ogilvy and Friedman have played in the top two spots on the ladder throughout this season.
The Bears are 13-5, including a perfect 9-0, entering the weekend under the direction of eighth-year head coach Lucie Schmidhauser. The Bears own wins over Boston College, Seton Hall and South Florida and will be looking for its first Ivy win of the year following last weekend's 4-1 loss to Yale. Abigail Lee (21-9) and Ali Maguy (19-10) have combined for 40 singles wins at the top of the lineup as four different players have seen action in the top two spots on the ladder with six playing in the top three. The doubles team of Hannah Shen and Dani Ben-Abraham are 9-7 at the No. 1 spot to pace the team. The Bears lead the all-time series 33-14, though the teams have split the past four meetings.
