ITHACA, N.Y. -- Freshman
Lauriane Rougeau had a goal and an assist as the Cornell women's hockey team opened the 2009-10 ECAC Hockey campaign with a 3-0 victory over #6 Dartmouth on Friday afternoon at Lynah Rink. The win over the Big Green was the Big Red's first win over Dartmouth since Jan. 24, 1999, and the first shutout over Dartmouth since the 1996-97 season.
Cornell scored a goal in each period and one on the power play, at even strength and one short-handed.
Kendice Ogilvie and
Laura Fortino both added a goal, while
Catherine White had a pair of assists.
Amanda Mazzotta stopped 22 shots for her second career shutout.
The Big Red got on the board at the 17:09 mark of the first period when Ogilvie scored what would turn out to be the eventual game-winner. White sent a puck to the point for Rougeau, who ripped a shot on goal that was turned away by Dartmouth goaltender Mariel Lacina. The rebound came off to Ogilvie between the circles, who easily slipped the puck into the open goal.
At the 2:44 mark of the second period, the Big Red went ahead by two with Rougeau's first career goal. With the Big Green on a power play with a penalty on Cornell's Mel Jue,
Karlee Overguard sent a puck on the Dartmouth goal that was saved by Lacina, but again the rebound came off to the stick of a Big Red player. Rougeau roofed her shot off the cross bar and in to give the Big Red an insurance tally.
Cornell made the score 3-0 at the 14:53 mark of the third period when Fortino skated in from the point, weaving through traffic, and ripped a wrist shot into the near post.
Mazzotta came up huge in preserving the shutout, stopping seven shots in the third period, including a trio in quick succession. Lacina stopped 30 Cornell shots in taking the loss for Dartmouth.
Cornell finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play, while Dartmouth was held scoreless in its seven power-play chances.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday, playing host to Harvard in an ECAC Hockey game at Lynah Rink at 3 p.m.
