ITHACA, N.Y.—The Big Red women's hockey team clinched an ECAC Hockey playoff spot on Saturday afternoon with a 3-3 tie against No. 8 Dartmouth in a crowd of over 500. Cornell honored its three seniors in their final home game of the season, and senior Emma Chipman notched a goal and added an assist for the Big Red. Rebecca Johnston and Liz Zorn also scored for Cornell, and Jenny Niesluchowski made 34 saves in net for the Big Red. Cornell moves to 11-11-5 overall and 7-8-5 in ECAC Hockey action, while Dartmouth is 16-7-3 and 13-4-3 in league player.
Dartmouth dominated play early in the first after the Big Red took back-to-back penalties to give the Big Green over a minute of a two-man advantage. Cornell killed off the two penalties and switched gears to come on strong midway through the period.
Freshmen Catherine White and Chelsea Karpenko kept the puck in the Dartmouth zone behind the net before pushing it to the front of the crease. With a pack of players in front of the goal, the puck found the stick of Chipman who flipped it up and over goaltender Carli Clemis to put the Big Red up by one.
Dartmouth took a roughing penalty with less than two minutes off the clock in the second and the Big Red took advantage of the power play opportunity. White fed the puck to Johnston on the point, and the Big Red forward skated around three Dartmouth players before shooting between Clemis's legs to put Cornell up by two.
Cornell's celebration was cut short when Dartmouth scored its first goal at 2:56 of the second. Kelly Foley fed Jenna Cunningham the puck from the corner, and she flipped it over Niesluchowski's leg pad.
The Big Red took its lead into the third period, and at 7:13 it increased its advantage to two. Karlee Overguard and Emma Chipman set up the play along the blue line and passed to Zorn in the middle of the right circle. Zorn let go of a wrist shot that sailed past Clemis.
The Big Red was plagued by penalties midway through the third period and Dartmouth quickly took advantage to tie the game. At 11:05, Amanda Trunzo caught a pass from Maggie Kennedy and flipped the puck into the right side of the net. Julia Bronson tied the game at 14:01 when she scored off the crossbar from the right point.
Both teams created numerous scoring chances in the remainder of the third period and during overtime, but in a battle of goaltending, each netminder held strong to keep the game tied after 65 minutes of play.
The Big Red outshot Dartmouth 43-37. Cornell was 1-7 on the power play, while Dartmouth was 2-5.
Cornell will hit the road next weekend to play its final games of the regular season against Union and Rensselaer.
