Softball Continues Stellar Ivy Play With Two Wins at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J.—
The Big Red softball team continued its strong Ivy play on Friday picking up two wins over Princeton on the road. Cornell defeated the Tigers, 5-1, in game one, before shutting out its opponent, 7-0, in game two. Jessy Berkey and Ashley Garvey each notched home runs for the Big Red, while sophomores Elizabeth Dalrymple and Ali Tomlinson each earned a win. Cornell improves to 38-10 overall and 15-3 against the Ancient Eight, while Princeton fell to 14-20 and 8-10 Ivy.

Cornell had already secured its Ivy League South Division title heading into the weekend, but was looking to distance itself from North Division leaders, Dartmouth. The division winner with the best Ivy League record plays host to the Ivy playoffs on May 2-3. Dartmouth sits one game in front of Harvard, and the two teams will play a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday. With two games left in its regular conference season, the Big Red has four more wins than the Big Green.

Garvey led the Big Red with three RBI, on three hits. Tomlinson struck out seven batters in her game two win, and batted in both games with two doubles. Berkey and junior Alison Intihar each drove in two runs for Cornell. Dalrymple notched nine strikeouts for the win in game one to move to 16-3 for the season.

Princeton was led by Abbott, who went 5-for-8 at the plate with a solo home run. VandeBergh, Jamie Lettire and Welch each had two hits. Lettire suffered the loss in game one, while Tolfa took the loss in game two.

In the first game with two outs, junior Elise Menaker singled to left field and stole second base. Garvey singled up the middle to give the Big Red an early 1-0 lead.

Princeton quickly tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning when Abbott homered over the center field fence. Dalrymple struck out three batters in the inning.

The score remained tied until the top of the fifth inning. Tomlinson led off with a single up the middle, and freshman Katie Watts pinch ran. Vanessa Leonhard was hit by a pitch, and the runners advanced on a sac bunt by freshman Cassie Walisiak. Intihar doubled down the leftfield line to drive in two runs. Menaker reached base on a Princeton fielding error allowing Intihar to score, putting Cornell up, 4-1.

Berkey had a solo home run in the top of the sixth to score Cornell's final run. The Big Red held the Tigers scoreless in the final to innings to win a 5-1 game.

The two teams were scoreless in the second game until the top of the third. With two outs and a baserunner on first, March singled through the left side. Menaker followed with a single through the right side to drive in a run. Garvey drove in another run with a single up the middle, and after Risica walked, Menaker scored on a wild pitch to give the Big Red a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth with one out, Tomlinson doubled to left and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Morgan Cawley came in to pinch run for Tomlinson. Senior Jaime Tupino pinch hit and with a bunt, allowed Cawley to score.

March was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh, and she advanced to second off a bunt by Menaker. March scored on a passed ball, and Berkey singled through the right side to drive in Cornell's seventh run. Cornell held its lead in the bottom of the inning to win a 7-0 contest.

The Big Red will play host to Princeton for two more games on Sunday afternoon at Niemand·Robison Field. Cornell will honor its four seniors before the games begin at 12:30 p.m.
