ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell opened the game on a 30-4 run and controlled all aspects of the game in winning its 10th consecutive game, a 75-49 triumph over Bryant on Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena in Bartels Hall. The win helped the Big Red improve to 12-2, while the Bulldogs remained winless at 0-14.
Senior
Ryan Wittman, the Ivy League's all-time leader in 3-point field goals, set a Newman Arena record by going 5-of-5 from beyond the arc and 7-of-7 overall en route to a game-high 19 points in just 14 minutes, while
Max Groebe had his second straight hot shooting night with 13 points. Cornell's five starters, none of whom played more than 20 minutes in the win, combined to make 17-of-21 shots from the floor and 8-of-10 from beyond the arc with 13 assists and just four turnovers.
Jon Jaques added nine points,
Geoff Reeves had eight to go along with three assists, and both
Mark Coury and
Andre Wilkins had six points.
Chris Wroblewski had four points and six assists while running the offense. Overall, Cornell shot 49 percent from the floor, 52 percent from 3-point range (12-of-23) and assisted on 21 baskets. Defensively, the Big Red showed continued improvement, limiting Bryant to 35 percent overall and 27 percent from beyond the arc.
Vlad Kondratyev had a team-best 15 points off the bench for Bryant, while Michael Chroney had 10 points and six rebounds. Raphael Jordan notched nine points and Chris Birrell had a team-best four steals. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 19 times in suffering its 15th straight defeat dating back to last year.
Any chance for a Bulldog upset were quickly shot down by strong early defense, including two steals in the first two minutes that led to a Wittman 3-pointer and a jumper by Wroblewski as part of a quick 7-0 spurt to open the game. After Bryant got on the board, the Big Red extended the lead to 22-2 less than seven minutes in with excellent rebounding and crisp passing. Another basket by Bryant, this time by Kondratyev, spurred an 8-0 run over two minutes that was bookended by Groebe 3-pointers. In all, the Big Red hit its first eight 3-pointers on the way to its 42-14 edge aft the final media timeout of the half.
The home team shot 58 percent in the first half, but it was its 8-of-11 from beyond the arc that turned a strong performance into a runaway. Cornell went into the locker room up 44-19 as Groebe was 4-of-5 from three in the first 20 minutes.
It didn't get any better in the second half, as the starters went on a 19-7 run in the first 4:42 before effectively exiting the game for good up 63-28. The Cornell lead never got lower than the final margin of 24, with all 12 players off the bench seeing at least three minutes.
The Big Red will face No. 1 Kansas on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m. CT at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan.
