Women's Hockey Falls At Providence, 6-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College jumped out to a 3-1 first-period lead and went on to pick up a 6-3 victory over the Cornell women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Kendice Ogilvie had a goal and an assist to lead the Big Red offense on the afternoon.

Cornell, which dressed only 12 skaters due to injuries and players playing internationally, also got goals from Hayley Hughes and Chelsea Karpenko, while Melanie Jue, Jess Martino and Liz Zorn each added an assist. Katie Wilson, seeing her first action of the season, made 21 saves in taking the loss. Cornell finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play and was a perfect 4-for-4 in killing penalties.

Providence got on the board with a pair of goals midway through the first period before Karpenko drew the Big Red to within one on a power play goal, with Jue collecting the assist. Providence's Jessica Vella put the Friars back up by two with two minutes to play in the period as the Friars went to the locker room ahead, 3-1.

In the second period, Providence picked up another two goals to make the score 5-1 before Hughes tallied her fourth goal of the season with a minute and a half to play in the period. Providence's Abby Gauthier put the Friars back up by four, 6-2, with her unassisted goal three minutes into the third period before Ogilvie scored the game's final goal with 12 minutes to play in the contest, with Martino picking up the assist.

Providence's Genevieve Lacasse stopped 22 shots in the win for the Friars, who improve to 7-7-8 on the year. Cornell falls to 8-6-2 with the loss.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday in a 2 p.m. contest at Schneider Arena in Providence, Cornell's final non-conference contest of the season.
