Box Score
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Junior
Brook Chang and sophomore
Maneesha Chitanvis scored in the first and second half, respectively, as the Big Red women's soccer team scored a 2-0 victory against Colgate on Sunday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. Cornell improved to 5-5 on the year with the win, while Colgate slipped to 3-9 for the season.
Caedran Harvey and
Xandra Hompe both collected an assist on the match, while
Kelly Murphy made four saves to secure her second shutout of the season. For Colgate, Alexis Longwell stopped one shot in taking the loss.
An evenly matched first half saw Cornell take a lead in the 25th minute on Chang's fourth goal of the season.
Rachel Nichols began the play by slipping a through-ball to Harvey on the right flank, and the freshman took the ball to the endline and passed backwards toward the penalty spot. There, Chang ran onto the ball without a Colgate defender near her, and calmly one-timed a shot to the far post, giving Cornell the 1-0 lead into the half.
With Cornell leading after the break, Colgate had to press the game, but could not solve the Cornell back line that allowed just one shot on goal in the entire second half. The Big Red was content to sit back and counterattack, and that strategy paid off late when Hompe sent a pass to the left side for Chitanvis, who fired a rocket of a left-footed shot that beat Longwell inside the near post with under three minutes to play.
The Big Red will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Harvard for an 11 a.m. contest in Cambridge, Mass.
